Job Summary
We are looking to recruit a consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics across Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, consisting of two busy district general hospitals: University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. This particular post is for a candidate to work full-time (10 Programmed Activities) with expertise in lower limb hip and knee with on-call cover based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. Elective work is undertaken at both hospital sites. In addition, there will be some elective operating lists at the Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington.
The successful candidate will join a team of twenty consultants. We believe these new posts all provide time, support and recognition for well-trained individuals to develop their clinical and teaching skills, and to deliver excellent patient care. The appointment will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions. The post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions.
Main duties of the job
This post will be for a consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics, with expertise in complex trauma and hip and knee surgery. The post will be for 10 PAs. On-call cover will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital covering a 1 in 11 on-call rota for weekends and non-resident nights and a 1:8 on-call rota for weekdays. Daytime elective work can be scheduled at both hospital sites. Proven competency in trauma and lower limb surgery will be required. This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent and busy Orthopaedic Service and support the 18-weeks target.
The successful candidates would join the existing team of 15 substantive consultants at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The appointment will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service. The post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and to participate in clinical governance and teaching activity. Opportunities for getting involved in NHS leadership will also be made available.

Job Responsibilities
* Clinical Responsibilities: The Consultant will be required to assist management and its agents during investigations into claims alleging medical negligence and where requested, to provide related factual statements. The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain a high quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision.
* Medical Education & Teaching: This post will be expected to participate in Audit, teaching of Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals.
* Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance: A multi-disciplinary audit is conducted on a monthly basis, led by a designated consultant responsible for audit.
* Continuing Professional Development: Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.
* Policy, Planning and Management: Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
Person Specification
* Qualifications Essential: Full General Medical Council registration with License to Practice, Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR, or - European Community Rights, Primary medical qualification, An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification e.g. FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) or equivalent, Formal fellowship training in hip and knee, Formal fellowship training in trauma.
* Desirable: Post graduate degree e.g. MD, PhD.
