Role Overview
Unison Ltd is seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join its dynamic and forward-thinking design team. This role offers the opportunity to provide innovative engineering solutions that combine extensive industry knowledge with cutting-edge technology.
Reporting directly to the Design Team Leader, the role requires a balance of autonomy and teamwork. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate initiative while also collaborating closely with team members.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and coordinate mechanical and electro-mechanical components of special purpose machinery, integrated automation systems, and robotic cells.
* Interpret project requirements, plan execution strategies, select system components, and prepare technical specifications.
* Produce accurate design calculations, technical documentation, and specifications.
* Create detailed 3D part and assembly models using SolidWorks, coordinating designs with other departments.
* Generate General Arrangement (GA) and Detail Drawings for manufacturing, adhering to industry standards.
* Attend and contribute to design meetings and reviews, effectively communicating design intent.
* Support the installation team with layout drawings, technical input, and handover documentation during on-site project delivery.
* Over time, assume responsibility for managing full projects from concept design to final commissioning.
* Some domestic and international travel may be required.
Candidate Requirements
* Minimum 5 years of industry experience in designing special purpose machinery and automation systems.
* Degree or relevant qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or proven experience in a similar role.
* Proficient in SolidWorks, with advanced skills in 3D modelling, complex assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings.
* Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles.
* Familiarity with manufacturing methods including:
o Machining & Turning
o 3D Printing
o Sheet Metal Fabrication
o Welded Fabrications
* Capable of performing hand calculations and computational simulations to validate designs.
* Strong knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems is essential.
* Desirable experience includes:
o Machine tool and tooling design
o Kinematics and component sizing (motors, gearboxes, drive/guide elements)
o Basic understanding of drives and controls
o Hands-on experience in machine building
* Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment, meet strict deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
* Strong communication and teamwork skills, with a proactive, flexible, and methodical approach to problem-solving.
