Principal Combustion Engineer responsibilities • Deliver robust design solutions that fulfil the fundamental design requirements. • Generate design requirements and identify risk areas. • Ability to use computational models from 1D to CFD to solve complex heat transfer and combustion problems. • Review and approve work completed by others. • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards. • Be responsible for delivering parts, assemblies and systems from concept to proof of principle. • Lead other engineering colleagues as required to support this. • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value IP while considering freedom to operate. • Be a source of combustion expertise to advise on design, development, material, manufacturing, prototype build and test issues. • Develop and mentor others within the wider team. • Create new, and improve upon existing, best practices and processes within the team. • As an assembly and component owner, drive the design activities to achieve the best balance between all physical disciplines and liaising with technical experts. • Ensure the design conforms to best practice. • To lead design reviews; layout, HAZOP, 3D model review, mech design etc. Principal Combustion Engineer requirements Degree level qualification in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. Significant industrial experience in the design and development of combustion systems. Strong capability in hand calculations to validate initial designs and simulation results. High proficiency in 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software. Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Knowledge of physical failure modes and approaches to root cause analysis. Experience in design verification methods and defining suitable test procedures. Effective communicator with the ability to convey complex technical information concisely and accurately. Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet project deadlines. Desirable Experience: Knowledge of power system design, including motors, transmissions, and energy storage. Experience with structural finite element analysis (FEA) of components and assemblies. Understanding of reaction kinetics related to oxidizing and decomposition catalysts. Experience with statistics, robust design, and systems engineering methodologies. Capability in performing tolerance stack analysis on complex assemblies. Awareness of compliance considerations, including electrical insulation, creepage and clearance distances, and flammability ratings.
