Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for Paramedics or qualified Nurses with an Urgent or Primary Care background to join our team at High Weald, Lewes & Havens Urgent Care Units and be supported through a pathway to achieve full Emergency Care Practitioner status.
You will be based at Lewes Urgent Treatment Centre, Uckfield Minor Injury or Crowborough Minor Injury Unit where you will immediately start to gain hands-on experience in treating patients with both injury and illness presentations.
You will need to have full registration as either a Paramedic or Nurse and ideally will have at least 1 - 2 years experience in an urgent or primary (GP) care setting.
You will be required to complete accredited study in: Advanced Physical Assessment, Minor Injury and Minor Illness. The Trust will fund your studies and provide agreed study time and this is expected to take you around 18 months to 2 years to achieve, whereby you will automatically be uplifted to a Band 7.
You will be working with a team of excellent, qualified Practitioners who will mentor you, provide regular supervision and share their knowledge.
Main duties of the job
1. To work towards autonomously assessing & treating a wide range of presentations to the Units.
2. To accurately diagnose both minor injury and minor illness presentations.
3. To be able to initiate emergency treatments to patients who are acutely unwell.
4. To work towards telephone triage of patients who are referred to the UTC via 111 appointments.
5. To stream patients accordingly and signpost to other services as appropriate.
6. To contribute to a positive and nurturing environment for all staff and patients.

8. Share ownership for the housekeeping of all the Units: Infection Control guidelines, ordering, reporting issues & general running of the Units.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To work towards autonomous triage, assessment, examination and treatment of the nature & extent of injury or illness for each patient. Assess inappropriate attendances & re-direct them to the most appropriate service. To assess those that are acutely unwell & arrange any immediate treatment (within guidelines) & safe transfer to the most appropriate facility. The trainee ECP will take on an increasing amount of responsibility as experience increases.
To refer, when appropriate, to other specialist teams in multiple settings using the appropriate medical terminology e.g. Fracture Clinics, Physio, Hospital on call teams, Consultants.
The post holder will manage own workload and delegate tasks as appropriate.
Use of clinical tools such as x-ray and near patient testing. To know when to request and how to interpret results, working towards making independent judgement on the diagnosis and treatment. Recognise own limitations and seek further opinion where required.
To provide holistic evidence-based healthcare and health promotion for all patients from admission to discharge.
To use & develop skills, following a period of training & assessment, that will include tissue adhesives, suturing, administration of injections including infiltration of local anaesthetic, manipulation of pulled elbows, digits, plastering & good knowledge & administration of PGD’s.
To be aware of all Business Continuity, Emergency planning in the event of an untoward incident.
Contribute to Urgent Care protocols and make suggestions for service improvement.
The post holder will gain experience in good budgetary value for money when ordering stock and equipment, will verify timesheets and be responsible for safekeeping of any patient’s valuables.
Complete and/or participate in requested audits as required e.g., IC, equipment checks, FFT.
To supervise & mentor HCA’s and student nurses.
To demonstrate personal & professional development and undertake training where required within agreed timescales.
To keep up to date with all required Statutory & Mandatory training and any relevant to the Units.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Qualified Nurse or Paramedic.
* Degree or Post Graduation qualification.
* Advanced Physical Assessment.
* Minor Injury and / or minor illness.
Experience
* At least 1 year post experience in related setting.
* Recent clinical experience in assessing patients.
* Experience of using clinical software programmes.
* Knowledge and use of PGDs.
Skills & knowledge
* Ability to demonstrate excellent clinical skills.
* Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills.
* Can demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding adults & children.
* Knowledge of national Policies regarding urgent care.
