Nurse Specialist (Metabolic Bone Disease)
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
This is an exciting opportunity to recruit to the Metabolic Bone Disease Specialist Nurse team. The team is part of the wider Rheumatology Service and provides the metabolic bone disease service to the Newcastle population, offering a highly specialised service to patients with osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease within the North East region.
The Specialist Nurse will provide clinical care for patients with a wide range of metabolic bone disease conditions, across outpatient, day-case, at the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary to deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice.
This can be a development opportunity, with a training pathway available for somebody new to the specialty, or still requiring specialist skills and qualifications. In this case, the successful candidate would be appointed as a Band 6 Specialist Nurse and would be supported to undertake the relevant qualifications, to meet competencies required of Band 7 substantive role within 18 - 24 months.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as a metabolic bone disease trainee Specialist Nurse, which will involve spending time in specialist clinics in the Rheumatology department at Freeman Hospital and some allocated time at the fracture liaison service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, under the supervision of the senior nursing team and the consultant rheumatology team.
The substantive Band 7 role will be responsible for the clinical assessment and management of a cohort of patients with diagnosed osteoporosis or other metabolic bone disease, working closely alongside consultants and allied health professionals. This will involve independent outpatient clinics, involvement in bone density scanning process, and patient follow up and monitoring.
As well as being able to manage metabolic bone disease conditions, we would expect the post holder to develop an interest in a subspecialty, growing their clinical knowledge and contributing to service developments and improvements in this area.
