The Role
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Head of Engineering Investment - Materials Division, you will play a pivotal role in providing the strategic engineering voice for an expanding Materials Division. You will manage the design, build, installation, commissioning and strategy (for maintenance/repair/expansion) for all Materials Division facilities - existing and planned (MRF I-III). You will act as the Design Authority on new engineering in the Division and line manage and develop (in size and quality of delivery) the engineering team in the Division.
Key Accountabilities:
* Scope and deliver new engineering capability build across the Materials Division:
o Deliver the (non-commercial ie. the HOW rather than WHY) business case content for MRF II and III, aligned to the UK Fusion Materials Roadmap and in collaboration with related teams and activities in the Materials Division and further afield. Develop a proton beamline facility proposal for Culham Campus (~£45m).
o Align Divisional engineering plans with those of internal and external senior stakeholders to deliver the UKAEA Mission and Goals.
o Act as policy developer, ensuring compliance with Culham site QSHERA guard rails, but simultaneously expanding the latter to encompass new site contexts (e.g. University of Durham’s NETPARK campus).
o Report on team progress and activities to UKAEA’s ExCo, Funder organisations (NNUF, Henry Royce Institute, EPSRC) and external senior stakeholders.
* Provide high level inputs to the Materials Division’s annual business planning, budget creation, people reviews and resource scoping. Drive capitalisation of the engineering assets via regular reporting and engagement with the finance team to ensure timebound conversion of engineering activity to value recognition in the UKAEA P&L for the Division.
* Create a resilient, appropriately-scaled and inclusive engineering resource in the Division with suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
* Line manage the senior engineering resources in MRF I, II and III, delivering performance management by creating an environment where lateral thinking is encouraged, productivity is enabled, and communication is proactive.
* Provide technical guidance to extend the team’s engineering expertise to establish the Division as the UK’s leading facility for experimental research on irradiated materials.
* Manage the completion of the commissioning (and State 2 conversion, where relevant) of all Engineering (instruments, ancillary plant and utilities, robotic and other remote handling equipment, C&I etc) in MRF I.
* Leverage expertise (including machining capabilities and the job carding system) in other UKAEA units to extend the engineering resource available for MRF I-III engineering delivery.
* Deliver a working suite of hot cells by the end of 2025, comprising i) the site acceptance tests in Q2 to close out the £9m Hot Cell Extension project and ii) refitting and integration of the original 4 MRF hot cells (~£5m) in Q3,4.
* Manage the launch of MRF II (~£12m) via creation and oversight of a civils+engineering+science project team for conversion of J41 over a 36 month timeframe.
* Manage the launch of MRF III (~£12m) via creation and oversight of a civils+engineering+science project team for the Irradiated Magnet Materials research facility at Uni Durham over 2025-2027.
* Create management systems and implement Systems Engineering tools and processes to deliver transparent governance and legislative compliance for the Division’s engineering resource, and oversee machine certification work, where relevant, aligned with the Office of the Chief Engineer at UKAEA.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Degree in engineering discipline with a proven track record of delivering in research environments - preferably Chartered Engineer, skilled enough to be able to be creative in combining system engineering implementation, and to lead design activities across several engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, electronic).
* Experience in requirements for CE/UKCA certification (preferably with machine certification qualification).
* Experience in large team management.
* Experience in project management - Ability to estimate resource requirements and focus on delivery to an agreed timeline, clear understanding of, and adherence to, scope.
* Experience of high hazard plant in a safety management or technical management capacity.
* Ability to demonstrate strategic planning and leadership to support business goals.
* Good oral and written communication ability.
* Ability to deal with uncertainty - Flexibility in responding to unforeseen changes with a view to minimising impact on technical delivery.
Desirable:
* Experience in hot-cell facilities or nuclear engineering.
