Hymers College, a leading independent day school in East Yorkshire, is seeking to appoint an outstanding teacher of Music at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level to cover the teaching commitment of the Director of Music who will be on temporary maternity leave.
The role would suit an experienced teacher with a proven record of academic success, or a less experienced teacher with the subject knowledge to stretch and challenge pupils studying A Level Music. In either case, you will be keen to communicate your love of the subject, both in your lessons and beyond the timetable, in a school where teachers are enthusiastic practitioners of their subjects and have a strong sense of community.
The ability and passion to contribute to the department’s co-curricular Music provision, including concerts, is essential. However, no specific area of expertise (e.g. choral, orchestral) is sought.
Music at Hymers has a long and distinguished tradition of excellence. This thriving department enjoys first-class accommodation and facilities. In 2014, the Stephen Martin Music School was opened by John Rutter, with a large chamber concert room named after him, a recording studio, band room, percussion suite, seven instrumental teaching rooms, a large classroom with keyboards and a music technology classroom with PCs and full-size keyboards.
Hymers pupils perform in many concerts, festivals and competitions: in school, locally and nationally. The Junior School Choirs have regularly reached the finals of Barnardo’s Competition and have been invited to sing at the Llangollen Festival in recent years.
In recent years, pupils and staff from the Music and Drama departments have produced a number of musicals of outstanding quality, performed in our Dame Judy Dench Theatre. In addition to the full-time staff, there are 12 instrumental teachers who deliver around 250 vocal and instrumental lessons a week. These instrumental teachers also lead and support ensembles in rehearsals and concerts. We have an ABRSM special visit each term when pupils can enjoy performed assessments in familiar surroundings. The Music Department also makes important contributions to a number of high-profile school events such as the annual Speech Day, Remembrance Day Service, and the annual Charity Carol Concert. The appointed candidate will be expected to actively support these events.
Academic Music is taught in Form Groups at Years 7 and 8 and becomes optional for Year 9 and then GCSE and A Level. There is a single GCSE group in each of Years 10 and 11, with an average size of 12. Attainment at GCSE is extremely high: across the last three years, 64% of GCSE Music grades have been at grades 9-7 and 39% have been at grades 9-8. The A Level groups in Years 12 and 13 each have two pupils. Again, year-on-year, attainment is extremely high: 60% of grades in A Level Music over the last three years have been A* or A, with 80% at A*-B.
Successful staff will become part of the vibrant Hymers College teaching life. Opportunities in the co-curricular delivery of clubs and societies to enthusiastic pupils add an extremely fulfilling aspect to the job and one difficult to replicate in other schools.
You will have a university honours degree in Music or a related discipline, ideally (but not essentially) with a recognised post-graduate teaching qualification. The post would suit an experienced or recently qualified teacher. There is the scope to support the Continuing Professional Development of an outstanding teacher.
Excellent communication (written and verbal), organisational and time-management skills are essential. Good ICT skills are also a requirement.
Experience of teaching and/or the ability to teach Music to GCSE and A Level, as well as potential contributions to the school’s extensive co-curricular Music programme, should be detailed within the accompanying letter to the application form.
The Deputy Head (Management), Mr Robert Wright, would be delighted to discuss the School or answer any questions over the phone (01482 343555) or by email contact at rpwright@hymers.org.
