Job summary To undertake as directed, phlebotomies duties throughout the trust. This will involve routinely handling biological samples and it is therefore essential that he/she is aware of the departmental safety policies which must be observed at all times. The post holder will work as part of a team to provide a blood sample collection service to the wards and outpatient. The post holder will be required to perform a range of phlebotomy / venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings and will work without direct supervision. The work requires flexible approach to hours of employment. You will also be required to cover Weekends (Saturday (7 -3) and Sunday (11-1600)) /Bank Holidays pro rata. Main duties of the job Collect blood samples from inpatients and from patients attending the outpatient clinics within the Trust sites. Communication and people skills are an important part of being a phlebotomist. There are many people who are scared of needles and get sick at the sight of blood. It is a phlebotomist's responsibility to make sure they explain the procedure to alleviate fears and elicit cooperation In cases of particular difficulty to obtaining the blood sample, refer the patient back to the requesting doctor. To dispose safely of used needles and contaminated waste in the appropriate containers To ensure samples are labelled accurately with required patient information and tests required To maintain knowledge and skills in emergency situations, e.g. fainting/collapse of the patient Collects samples from patients in high risk categories and is aware of potential hazards. Is able to follow agreed protocol to minimise risk to self and others. Is aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to be maintained during the venepuncture procedure. This includes site selection, correct use of tourniquet and selection of blood sample bottles. Ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental policies and procedures by following BCSH guidelines. Ensures that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department.
