Virology biomedical scientists are responsible for the diagnosis of infection and disease processes by the application of biological, serological and molecular technology, utilizing the most up to date scientific methods.
We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join our dedicated team of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants in the Virology laboratory at the Hull site. Diagnostic work includes examination of patient samples such as blood, respiratory samples and cerebrospinal fluid using manual and automated techniques.
This vacancy will be considered for a secondment opportunity. Please note - if you would like your application to be considered for secondment, you must secure agreement from your line manager beforehand that you can be released to undertake the role.

Main duties of the job
1. Performing work strictly according to current Standard Operating Procedures in order to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely reports.
2. Safely handling blood, respiratory samples and other patient samples.
3. Ensuring that reagents are prepared, stored and used according to manufacturer guidelines and laboratory procedures.
4. Ensuring that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out, and recorded, on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to being used for patient investigations.
5. Performing manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
6. Measuring and monitoring the quality of laboratory investigations using appropriate internal and external quality procedures.
7. Taking corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate loss of performance of the laboratory instruments or methods.
8. Ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively.
9. Ensuring first line trouble shooting of complex analytical equipment or methods is carried out, and if necessary, participate in the resolution of equipment or method failures.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
* Registered with the Health Professions Council
* Participates in continuing professional development
Experience and Knowledge Required
* Previous laboratory work
* Working as a member of a team
* Previous work in a microbiology/virology laboratory
Aptitude and Personal Qualities
* Able to work flexibly
* Good communication and interpersonal skills
Skills and Attributes
* Knowledge of microbiology/virology techniques
* Knowledge of laboratory safety
* Good command of written and spoken English
* Evidence of technical ability
* Knowledge of basic molecular diagnostic techniques
