The post holder will act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology to the Trust and its contracted customers. The ideal candidate will also be accredited by RPA2000 to act as a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) within this specialty, or be on a short timescale pathway to achieving this status. It would also be advantageous if the applicant has experience of and could offer leadership within Non-Ionising Radiation Physics.
The Clinical and Radiation Physics team is part of the SEND (South, East and North Devon) Medical Physics network. Clinical and Radiation Physics provides Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Safety Services across the SEND geographic area to both NHS and non-NHS customers. This position is based within Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Exeter, although some work will be expected at the other sites in North Devon (Barnstaple) and Torbay. There are busy radiology and cardiology departments at the Royal Devon and Exeter, Torbay, and Northern Devon District Hospitals.
The team also provides medical physics services to the NHS Breast Screening Programme, various community hospitals, dentists, vets and the Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre, part of the University of Exeter, which operates a PET-CT service. There are significant redevelopment plans in progress across the area and the Exeter Nightingale Hospital has been repurposed as a community diagnostic hub with additional hubs planned in Torbay and North Devon.
Applicants for appointment at band 8b will have appropriate HCPC registration, significant relevant experience and a current certificate of recognition as an MPE and RPA. Applications are also invited from individuals with less relevant experience who may be considered for appointment at a lower band.
A full driving licence is required for this position and access to an appropriate vehicle for the carriage of test equipment within the network. The department encourages staff training and development and is an accredited training centre for the PTP, STP and HSST training schemes. The successful candidate will be encouraged and supported in further professional development, based on their needs and service objectives.
