We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and committed professional with the passion and drive to provide the highest quality and service of orthopaedic care to our patients at the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (SWAOC). The role of Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in SWAOC has grown with the needs and service provision to our expanding group of patients across multiple trusts within the Southwest. We currently have the ability, depending on service requirement, to be open 24 hours a day Monday to Saturday. We have two operating theatres that operate five days a week.
The Nightingale Exeter is hosted by the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and works within its agreed procedures, policies, and Trust values. This means we can provide the same benefits as the acute site, including training opportunities within your job role, study time, and engaging in CPD. We strive to help our staff create a healthy work-life balance through flexible working schemes and our family-friendly policies.
You will benefit from our comprehensive occupational health services and main site wellbeing activities and groups. SWAOC can also provide free onsite parking, and being situated just off junction 29/30 of the M5, access to the main trunk road of Devon is literally on our doorstep!
The team at SWAOC is excited to give patients a day or short stay option through its high volume, low complexity pathway which traditionally has meant an inpatient stay at an acute hospital. The pathways created at SWAOC are now regarded as the national benchmark, recently endorsed by GiRFT. The team has also achieved many national awards for its service within its first year of operating.
Procedures currently undertaken at SWAOC include hip and knee arthroplasty, soft tissue knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery, and hip arthroscopy. The team is planning to increase subspecialty expansion while innovating the traditional pathways. We also provide a Preparation for Surgery service at SWAOC, seeing and assessing patients from across the South-West region.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Registered Nurse with more than 2 years post-registration experience to be part of the Clinical Team on this unique project. It would be an advantage for applicants to have knowledge and clinical skills in an orthopaedic setting, but it is not essential. If you are as excited as we are to provide this amazing service to patients from all over the South West, please submit your application by the closing date. We look forward to welcoming you to our team! Previous applicants need not apply.
Working Pattern: Working patterns at SWAOC follow the standardised shift patterns within the Trust which are Long days (07:30 to 20:00). Early and Late shifts can be accommodated within those times if the need arises, and Night shifts (19:30 to 08:00). As an elective site, SWAOC is currently closed during public holidays with no on-call commitments.
Interview Date: Monday 18th of November. For further information please contact: Sarah Lewis Clinical Matron SWAOC at Sarah.Lewis84@nhs.net or Kath Littlejohns Clinical Nurse Manager SWAOC at Katharine.littlejohns@nhs.net. Preference will be given to staff with Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon.
The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust reserves the right to close the vacancy when sufficient applications have been received. The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was established in April 2022, bringing together the expertise of both the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.
Benefits: We will work together to maintain a culture that develops and supports you and your team. This might include funding for a care certificate, a degree or leadership qualifications, days off to study, engage in CPD, or rotational placements to help you hone your skills. Wherever you are heading in the NHS, we'll help you get there. Looking after you is important to us. We strive to help our staff create a healthy work-life balance through flexible working schemes and our family-friendly policies.
If you're starting out in the NHS, you'll start with 27 days paid annual leave (plus bank holidays), rising to 33 days plus bank holidays. You'll benefit from access to our own comprehensive occupational health services, including counselling, onsite wellbeing activities, and groups. Salary is not the only financial benefit; you'll have access to an extensive range of staff discounts on shopping, fitness and leisure options, and you can spread the cost of technology and home appliance purchases from major retailers. You will also have access to other benefits including: National discount services such as the Blue Light Card and Health Service Discounts, salary sacrifice options including our OFSTED rated outstanding nursery onsite at Exeter, and car lease schemes. The NHS Pension scheme (one of the most generous and comprehensive in the UK) and a Cycle to work scheme are also available. If the role is something you are interested in, we'd love to hear from you.
