About the role
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Sussex seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to deliver teaching in Chemistry. Applications will be accepted from individuals with expertise in any area of Chemistry, but we are particularly interested in those able to teach synthetic Chemistry beyond 1st year level.
The individual must be able to deliver lectures at 1st year level across all areas of Chemistry and at advanced level in the area of their own expertise. The successful applicant should also be able to undertake laboratory demonstrating across the breadth of Chemistry.
Sussex Chemistry delivers highly regarded undergraduate Chemistry degree programmes and is currently ranked 16th for Chemistry in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2025). We are currently in the middle of the roll out of an exciting new curriculum. The successful applicant will therefore be expected to deliver the new curriculum and to participate in the design of the new modules for this curriculum.
The post-holder will undertake a range of teaching and support duties within the Chemistry and Foundation year degree programmes including, but not restricted, to:
1. Delivery of lectures and workshops
2. Marking and assessment
3. Laboratory demonstrating across all areas of Chemistry
4. Pastoral duties, such as Academic Advising
5. Being an active member of the Chemistry Board of Study
6. Outreach and admissions activities
About you
You will be educated to PhD level and have an ability to teach in any area of Chemistry. We are particularly interested in applicants able to contribute to teaching in various aspects of synthetic Chemistry.
You will ideally have previous experience of teaching Chemistry at degree level and will be passionate about delivering high quality teaching and support to students.
You will be a collegiate individual with an enthusiasm to participate fully as an active and integral member of the Department.
About our School
In the School of Life Sciences we strive to understand the mechanisms that drive biological and chemical processes and to develop innovative and diverse approaches to enhance human health, technology and the environment. We undertake multidisciplinary research, teaching and engagement across a wide range of subjects, from Chemistry through Cellular and Molecular Biosciences to Conservation Biology.
The School comprises five Departments: Biochemistry & Biomedicine, Genome Damage and Stability Centre, Neuroscience, Ecology & Evolution and Chemistry. We also house the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre which works to deliver the bench-to-bedside translation of our discoveries. The breadth and depth of our cutting-edge research and innovative teaching practice is delivered by a diverse community who work across boundaries to deliver excellence, engage with real world problems and produce impact.
We pride ourselves on our world-leading research and have a strong research economy, with approximately 50% of our income stemming from research and an active grant portfolio of over £50 million. We host or form part of three University Centres of Excellence: the Genome Damage and Stability Centre, Sussex Neuroscience and Sussex Sustainability Research Programme. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 90.6 % of our Biological Sciences outputs and 84.8% of our Chemistry outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We are proud that in both areas, 100% of our Impact cases were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
