About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people, and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ, to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses, and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique, challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
Join our dynamic and growing team for this exciting opportunity! In a fast-paced environment, you'll develop and deliver key infrastructure to support our mission. You'll collaborate closely with business partners to create bespoke capabilities from concept to delivery, innovating with new and exciting technologies.
In this technical role, you'll be responsible for delivering, managing, and supporting bespoke IT infrastructure, which is crucial for the wider organisation's mission.
As an experienced engineer within the infrastructure team, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day support of our operational infrastructure. You'll build, integrate, and support bespoke capabilities, and assist with our journey to the cloud.
You'll also engage in horizon scanning vendors and associated technologies to stay abreast of the ever-changing technological landscape. Additionally, you'll participate in research and development (R&D) activities in support of business-sponsored projects. Your role will involve working with partners to maintain critical infrastructure and collaborating with other teams to resolve complex issues on an ad hoc basis under operational time pressures.
You'll ensure that data is effectively handled and integrated to support our goals. Your primary focus will be to manage our current infrastructure estate, design and build new systems in collaboration with key partners, and identify areas for improvement in line with the wider group strategy. Don't worry, we'll provide comprehensive training to help you succeed in this role.

In addition to these technical skills, you'll be responsible for system administration tasks, including Active Directory (AD) management, Domain Name System (DNS), server architecture, builds and configuration, patching, and storage. You should be capable of learning and addressing technical challenges, while maintaining a flexible attitude, especially during the high-tempo periods, which may require working outside regular hours and supporting other related technical teams.
Good interpersonal skills are essential, as you'll need to communicate effectively with a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Beneficial Knowledge or Experience:
* Automation tools (Ansible, scripting, Terraform)
* Containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
* Open-source software or tools
* Cloud technologies
Training and Development
There'll be significant training and continuous development opportunities within the role, as well as a budget provided to attend industry-recognised external courses and bootcamps related to the role. We're also committed to supporting additional home learning.
Recognising the skills and abilities of our staff now and as they progress through their careers is central to our culture. We do this by encouraging our staff to join the Cyber Technical Framework (CTF). The CTF has been developed to assess the knowledge, skills and attributes of our cyber technical specialists. It also provides support to help you progress your career, whether you aim to grow as a leader or deepen your technical expertise. Membership of the CTF is on an application basis via skills-based assessments and allows us to fully recognise and reward our specialists.
There'll be opportunities and financial support to specialise depending on your knowledge and experience, e.g., industry-recognised certifications (CCNA, CCNP, MCSE, MCP). In addition to the organisation induction, there will be a role-specific onboarding plan, that includes meeting other areas of the business, role-based training, partner introductions, and specific site visits.

Equal Opportunities
At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word, those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking, and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are underrepresented in our workforce, such as women, those from ethnic minority backgrounds, people with disabilities, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
We're Disability Confident
MI5 is proud to have achieved Leader status within the DWP's Disability Confident scheme. This is aimed at encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident, we aim to offer a fair and proportionate number of person-to-person interviews to any candidate who self-identifies as disabled and meets the essential criteria for the role. This is our 'Offer of Interview' (OOI). To secure an interview for this vacancy, the essential criteria (in order of application process) are:
* Passing a sift of your application to test your motivation for this role
* Able to demonstrate an interest in computer concepts and emerging technologies
* You can evidence an ability to problem solve using your technical skills
What to Expect
Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:
* Application sift, looking at your motivation for the role and the organisation.
* Competency-based interview with additional technical questions based on the role you are applying for.
If successful, you will receive a conditional offer of employment, subject to vetting.
Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process, including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.
