The Decontamination Services Hub within East Lancashire Hospitals require decontamination technicians to work mainly within the Hospital Endoscopy Decontamination Services and at times within the Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (HSDU)
You will be responsible for providing sterile surgical instruments, scopes, surgical supplies and clean laundry and linen. Our services are used by the Trust's many wards, departments and operating theatres. We also provide a service to external healthcare providers. These supplies are essential for good patient care.
There are various positions and locations available and post holders may be based on the Burnley General Teaching Hospital site and/or Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital site for HSDU and Endoscopy decontamination.
Endoscopy work Monday to Sunday between the hours of 7.30am - 7.30pm. The HSDU operates on a four week rota, Monday to Saturday between 6am and 10pm. A number of part time vacancies are available from 10 hours to 30 hour a week.
The department has a Quality Management System, work procedures and standard procedures. All work takes place to a high standard, quickly and accurately to meet the demands of operating theatres, wards and departments.
Work takes place individually and as part of a team.
Endoscopy processing consists of receipt, pre clean, decontaminating and packing Endoscopes ready for safe use on a patient. In the HSDU you will be responsible for assisting with the re-processing (includes receipting, cleaning and packing) of standard re-usable surgical instruments, Medical Devices, equipment and procedure packs.
In the Laundry you will work on modern industrial machinery to wash, dry, press and fold hospital linen. In the Sterile Linen Unit surgeon’s gowns, surgical drapes and wrap are washed, dried, inspected, folded and packed within a Clean Room.
You will take part in cross-site working as required to meet the needs of the service.

Please note, although this role is being advertised by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, it will transfer to OneLSC a Corporate Collaboration hosted by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust on 1.11.24. There are no plans to change the location of the role.
All tasks are carried out to departmental procedures and to production (amount of work carried out per hour) and quality standards. Quality checks take place at all stages of each process.
To work on the following tasks: Items to be scanned at all stages of the Decontamination process
• Receiptingof Medical Devices – ranging from basic instrument trays and Supplementary Items to the more complex Theatre Instrumentation to include Robotics and other scopes into the tracking and traceability system
• Follow any Media Instructions displayed by the tracking and traceability system
• Pre-Wash Inspection/Scanningof all relevant Medical Devices and checklists to ensure any issues are reported and actions
• Place all relevant items through the Soaking Process to ensure Cannulated items are flushed and brushed and that all excess contamination is removed prior to placing on the Washer Loading Racks
• Load and scan Itemsonto the relevant Washer Loading Racks to ensure all surfaces, joints, cannulas etc have maximum exposure to the water/cleaning agent -
• Manually Washas and when required any items that cannot be placed through an automated Wash Cycle as per Departmental Procedures – update Tracking and Traceability system
• Operatingthe washer/disinfectors/Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor for the purpose of cleaning/disinfecting surgical instruments in the washroom and verifying that the validated programme has taken place.- update the Tracking and Traceability system
• Unloadingthe Washer Disinfectors/Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor in the Clean Room, sorting the trays, scopes and packs onto relevant shelving ready for packing.
• Disassembling and reassemblingcomplex theatre instruments, scopes and devices.
• Checking instruments, scopes and devices to ensure that they are clean, in good working order, free from damage and carrying out any validation checks – follow relevant Procedures when they are not..
• Packing tray contents as per checklist and relevant guidance ready for sterilisation and use by clinicians on patients.
• Wrap tray contents as per departmental procedures
• Loading, operating and unloading sterilisers and checking that they have completed the validated programme – update the Tracking and Traceability System
• Loading and storing scopes in the endoscope drying cabinets.
• Follow Product Release procedures to enable Medical Devised to be despatched to the relevant service users – update Tracking and Traceability System
• Complete any relevant Despatch/Delivery documentation.
