About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to support the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy the DE&S corporate standards for Acquisition Safety. This role is part of the RESOLUTE VALKYRIE programme within DE&S UAS UAS2 and involves leading the delivery of key airworthiness strategies, managing safety assurance, and ensuring compliance with MOD, UK, and EU legislation.
This role offers a hybrid working arrangement, with approximately two days per week at Abbeywood, Bristol. The contract is inside IR35, and only sole UK nationals with SC clearance are eligible.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the development and implementation of airworthiness strategies and plans required by the Type Airworthiness Authority (TAA).
• Develop, manage, and maintain effective Safety Management Systems (SMS), identifying hazards and risk reduction measures.
• Provide task assurance of safety management processes and oversee the Master Evidence Record, ensuring regular reviews by claim owners.
• Take ownership of the Type Airworthiness Safety Assessment (TASA), ensuring compliance with all safety assurance requirements.
• Ensure adherence to UK, EU, and MOD safety regulations, providing expert safety advice to stakeholders.
• Develop, maintain, and monitor compliance with Project Safety Assurance Plans, ensuring necessary evidence is gathered and assessed.
• Lead the preparation and execution of Platform Safety Panels, reviewing and endorsing safety artefacts.
• Assess Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) safety artefacts as part of a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) panel.
• Oversee contractual safety management, ensuring suppliers meet safety requirements.
• Provide informed safety advice to decision-makers through Project Safety Panels and update key safety documentation.
Essential Experience & Skills
• Experience in Acquisition Safety & Environment within MOD or defence engineering projects.
• Strong understanding of airworthiness regulations, DE&S policy, and UK/EU safety legislation.
• Experience in hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety case development.
• Ability to manage safety management systems and lead on safety policy development.
• Experience engaging with Type Airworthiness Authorities (TAA) and MOD safety panels.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to liaise with technical teams, contractors, and senior decision-makers.
Desirable Skills
• Experience producing and reviewing Type Airworthiness Safety Assessments (TASA).
• Background in air domain engineering safety or related disciplines.
• Knowledge of safety compliance for Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) and MOD-related airworthiness certification.
