Department: The Emergency Department and all wards in an acute hospital at the LRI
As part of our Mental Health Liaison Service (MHLS) growth in line with our Core 24 Transformation, we have an exciting opportunity to recruit to a Link Worker.
This brand new role is subject to banding but indicative Band 4.
The role of MHLS is based across the Emergency Department and all wards in the University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust (UHL). The priority of Liaison Psychiatry is to bridge the gap between physical and mental health, by undertaking high-quality holistic assessments for individuals within the Acute General Hospital, experiencing mental health issues, physical illness, and distress. We operate 24 hours per day, 365 days a year - it is not expected in this role to work night shifts. The Mental Health Liaison Service provides a variety of services, including face-to-face mental health assessments in a variety of settings; these include the emergency department and all wards across three different sites with a range of specialities.
The service also provides ongoing mental health advice for people who have either attended the Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary or have been referred from any ward and under the care of UHL.
Main duties of the job
A key element of this role is working with acute trust (UHL) colleagues, establishing good working relationships, and acting as a resource in caring for patients who are presenting with a mental health problem.
You will be required to support patients waiting for triage assessments and inpatient admissions, undertake admin tasks in relation to patient care and MHLS, and represent MHLS at emergency department huddles and handovers.
Working within your own levels of competence, you will be assisting with triage assessments and care, providing specialist advice and knowledge.
An awareness of risk assessment principles and managing risk is important in this role. We would require you to be flexible and adaptable as it can be fast-paced and unpredictable at times - but you will always have the support of the Mental Health Practitioners around you.
