The purpose of this post is to work effectively as a lead member of an Early Learning and Childcare team to support in the delivery of a high quality, safe and balanced education and care service, which meets the needs of each young child and their families and is in accordance with relevant legislation and guidelines.
Postholders must apply for and maintain registered status with the registering body as long as the post is held.
The main duties of the Practitioner are:
1. To work effectively as a lead member of the Early Learning and Childcare team, guiding the work of the support worker, in the absence of a more senior team member, as delegated by the registered manager.
2. To interact effectively, enthusiastically and appropriately with young children to fully meet their individual education and care needs.
3. To promote and value each child and support their welfare, including their personal, social and emotional wellbeing.
4. To fully comply with relevant legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures relating to learning, care and health and safety, including Child Protection procedures and Health and Safety guidelines.
5. To undertake the planning and provision of a range of developmentally appropriate learning activities, in line with local and national advice and guidance including planned and spontaneous play activities, real life experiences and outdoor learning.
6. Working with the teacher, develop the learning environment which supports children to effectively develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
7. To create of a positive, child centred, inclusive and nurturing environment.
Scalloway Primary School is a non-denominational school located in the village of Scalloway, 7 miles from the main town of Lerwick. The school’s catchment area includes Scalloway, Trondra and the Tingwall Valley as far north as Griesta.
There are 7 classes in the Primary Department and a large Early Years and Childcare Department (delivering up to 30 hours per week). There are currently a total of pupils on the school and ELC roll combined. Secondary education for years S1-S6 is provided at the Anderson High School in Lerwick. The school canteen is onsite providing hot and cold meals daily.
Adjacent to the Primary School and ELC are Hame fae Hame (Childcare provision) and the Health Centre. The school makes use of the Games hall and swimming pool facilities which are situated next door.
The school is managed by the Head Teacher (Mrs Morag Fox) and two Principal Teachers. The current teaching staff comprises of 5 full-time class teachers and 2 job-shares. PE, Art and Music are provided by peripatetic specialists with a range of instrumental instruction timetabled for P5-7 pupils. Further support is provided by our Support for Learning teachers where appropriate. A team of Learning Support Workers compliment the role of the SfL teachers to meet the needs of all of our pupils.
