Hours of work: 37.5
The job holder will be required to work out of hours including unsocial and contractual overtime (specific rota details are held locally within departments).

AIM OF THE ROLE:
To be an efficient and flexible member of the Cellular Pathology team providing a consistently high quality and professional service to North West London Pathology and all users of the service.
Main duties of the job:
1. Provide and co-ordinate specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples.
2. To undertake the day to day management of the dissection area and specimen reception sections within the laboratory.
3. To develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills.
4. To provide the necessary training and supervision to staff within the section and visiting staff as required (medical, scientific and other staff).
5. To develop the service implementing new ideas to ensure that the roles change according to the changing clinical and research needs under the guidance of medical staff and the management team.
6. To actively participate in the training programmes required for the advanced dissection role.
Job responsibilities:
As a guide the working time for the advanced dissection postholders will be apportioned as follows:
80% dissection, encompassing A-E grade specimens (as appropriate and only where training and competency has been completed or consultant supervision is in place)
20% routine advanced BMS duties including acting as the designated person responsible for managing and co-ordinating activities within the cut-up or routine section of the histopathology laboratory. It is expected that this role may be shared by other Advanced BMS posts.
Clinical audit will be required to be completed periodically as a demonstration of ongoing clinical effectiveness.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication and Relationship Skills:

2. Responsibility- Scientific and Technical Duties:
1. Ensure that documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).
2. To demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards. To work towards promoting this to others.
3. Identify and report clinical and non-clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
4. To plan and prioritise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis.
5. To provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
6. To possess highly developed, advanced specialist scientific skills.
7. To ensure that the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff.
8. Responsible for the maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the section.
9. Adaptation to new methodology or working practices when required, due to changing circumstances.
10. Participation in and facilitation of Quality Assurance, Audit and clinical audit.
11. To be proactive in the generation and updating of standard operating procedures with appropriate documented change control.

3. Histology specimen dissection:
1. Participate in the surgical dissection of diagnostic A-E graded histopathology specimens.
2. Evaluate clinical information on histopathology request forms and understand specimen idiosyncrasies.
3. Accurately macroscopically examine, describe and photograph specimens where necessary.
4. Dissect and select relevant material for histological processing.
5. Select appropriate preparatory procedures to aid diagnostic interpretation e.g. decalcification etc.
6. Provide a provisional diagnostic macroscopic report dictation.
7. Be able to recall complex specimens with clarity, or have supporting evidence of dissection in way of drawings or pictures.
4. The post holder should also:
1. Be aware of knowledge and self limitations, and have a low threshold for seeking advice.
2. Keep adequate records of specimens dissected, including error logs and topical reflective practices.
3. Mentor or teach lower grade staff via tutorials, slide sessions and lectures.
4. Gain and maintain macroscopic and microscopic knowledge of specimens and body systems via lectures attended and via self-teaching.
5. Will be expected to work towards attaining formal IBMS qualifications in Histological Dissection if they do not possess them on appointment.
6. To act as the designated person responsible for managing and co-ordinating activities within the cut-up section and routine Histopathology Laboratory.
7. In conjunction with the Clinical Lead, Discipline Manager and Quality Manager to improve quality standards in the work performed in the histological cut-up area.
8. To participate in audits within the Division to monitor the effectiveness the quality management system.
5. Responsibility- Policy and Service:
1. To be involved actively in the implementation of Trust policies and procedures at department level, reinforcing their use.
2. Maintain, update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills, at first under supervision, using the Trust's Performance Review System, enabling standards of patient care to be monitored constantly and improved.
3. Record, report and investigate incidents/complaints in accordance with Trust policies.
4. To identify and carry out appropriate corrective action where required in response to non-conformities.
5. To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of the laboratory investigations using appropriate QC procedures.
6. Liaise with senior staff regarding KPIs/results/performance and identify areas for improvement in the laboratory.
6. Responsibility- Financial and Physical Resources:
1. Responsible for managing consumable and reagent stock supplies associated with the section.
2. Assist in the implementation, development and evaluation of new and existing techniques.
3. Responsible for the maintenance and calibration of equipment when working autonomously.
7. Responsibility Staff/ HR/ Leadership, & Training:
1. Maintain, update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills by participating in the Trust's 1:1 process and PDP development.
2. Be familiar with and follow all core trust policies such as sickness reporting, annual leave requesting, health and safety.
3. Be familiar with the Health and Safety policies of the Trust and the department and ensure that they are followed to maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.
4. Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, including support staff to promote a cohesive laboratory team and the achievement of team objectives.
5. May deputise for the line Manager as required.
6. The supervision of all grades of scientific, medical and support staff in the dissection section.
7. In conjunction with line managers, assist in the training of staff and undertake periodic competency assessments of staff.
8. Undertake and/or contribute to the appraisal of more junior members of staff using the Trust's 1:1 process and PDP development.
9. Responsible for the conduct of the staff being supervised in respect to their timekeeping, behaviour and safety. Report any problems to the line manager.
8. Education:
1. Must develop and improve your scientific expertise, which may be via CPD within an appraisal programme. Maintain a portfolio of relevant developments achieved.
2. To participate in the organisation of scientific teaching programmes.
3. Design and deliver training to staff within the department.
4. Undertake suitable training and development programmes to successfully acquire core competencies and thereafter maintain the required standards of competence when undertaking duties.
5. Maintain your Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
9. Responsibility- Information resources:
1. Undertake relevant training for electronic information systems in place & under development and be familiar and proficient with the use of the information technology systems within the department.

* HCPC Registration.
* MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in relevant discipline or demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in relevant discipline.
