Job Introduction
We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Operator to join the BBC Nations Operations team based in Jersey. The Ops team works alongside editorial colleagues in Regional TV, Local Radio and Online. We collaborate to produce engaging content and strong local journalism with high operational, craft and production standards for BBC Channel Islands. We multi-skill and regularly film, edit, direct, create graphics, and vision and sound mix.
We cover the islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm. The Islands are British Crown Dependencies, with their own governments and legal systems. There's a lot of news, from housing pressures, ferry and air links, to bad weather and the struggle for nurses and teachers. The islands have a really different news agenda to the UK.
Living here offers outstanding opportunities for everything from surfing to cycling and music. There's a vibrant local arts scene, great places to socialise and stunning coastline. You're never more than 20 minutes from a beach in the warmest place in the British Isles.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly, busy, creative environment with an established and experienced team which will help and support you to be the best you can be.
Main Responsibilities
As a technical operator you'll work in a busy news environment and develop an understanding of the varied technical roles that bring together a polished news programme. Ideally you will have experience of or an interest in one of the following skill sets:
* filming
* video editing
* directing
* graphic design
* vision mixing
* mixing sound
Due to the nature of the work and the geography of the Islands, you'll need to have a valid driving license.
Are you the right candidate?
We're looking for someone who is enthusiastic and self-disciplined who's able to plan ahead but also to deal with ever changing circumstances and make quick decisions. You'll need to be alert and confident in live news scenarios, an excellent communicator and be able to develop an understanding of operational equipment and ways of working. You'll have an interest in our content and services and recognise the importance of being able to adapt in line with changing audience behaviour.
If this role sounds appealing but you're not sure if this is you, we'd also love to hear from you. Even if you don't match all of the skills required, but have a strong desire to learn and be part of our team, do consider applying.
