Protect, Defend, Strengthen. These are three things you will support Northern to do as the frontline of Cyber Security.
As the Senior Cyber Security Officer, you will be at the heart of Northern's cyber security strategy, ensuring our systems remain resilient against ever-evolving threats. You will play a critical role in implementing and maintaining cutting-edge security solutions while driving best practices across the organisation.
Covering a broad scope, you will work closely with technical stakeholders to monitor threats and respond to security challenges. Beyond technical expertise, this role demands strategic thinking and a strong ability to influence and guide teams across the business, ensuring cyber security is embedded in decision making at all levels.
What you'll be doing:
* Strategic Guidance and Advisory: Mentor Cyber Security Officers, advise executive and IT leadership, and deliver high-level briefings and executive reports on cyber security risks and mitigation strategies.
* Risk Management & Compliance: Conduct high-level risk assessments, oversee security reviews, and collaborate with risk, legal, and compliance teams to ensure adherence to national and international cyber security frameworks.
* Technical Security Implementation: Evaluate and integrate advanced security tools and measures across IT operations, ensuring that all teams deploy robust technical controls and secure project designs.
* Security Operations & Incident Response: Lead proactive threat detection, vulnerability management, and coordinated incident response efforts, escalating and resolving critical security events.
* Testing, Automation & Documentation: Oversee regular penetration testing and vulnerability assessments and maintain comprehensive security policies and documentation.
About you:
You have a strong educational foundation in cybersecurity, IT, or a related field, complemented by industry recognised certifications. Demonstrable success in a corporate security role, efficiently translating complex technical details into practical, accessible tools for a variety of stakeholders.
* Bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, Computer Science, IT, or a related field, plus certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CEH, CompTIA, or Security+.
* Strong understanding of cybersecurity frameworks, network security, encryption, authentication protocols, and experience with firewalls, intrusion detection systems, SIEM solutions, and anti-virus software.
* Demonstrated ability in risk assessments, incident response, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
* Expertise in translating complex security documentation into straightforward information and guidance for non-technical stakeholders.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
