Technical Director
Location: London - Hybrid
Type: Permanent OR Contract (Day Rate)
Motorsport Role Description
This role would provide a high level of customer support that is appropriate for a World Championship status series using complex technology, and would ensure:
1. Single Point of Contact: There is a single go-to person with the power and budgetary responsibility to resolve important technical matters, in some cases with immediate effect (not a coordinator).
2. Stakeholder Alignment: Exact alignment and effective communications between all stakeholders.
3. Documentation: All technical issues are properly documented and communicated to all stakeholders in a timely manner.
4. Fault Investigation: Any underlying design faults causing technical issues are properly investigated with thorough engineering analysis, and subsequent reports are distributed to all stakeholders in a timely manner.
5. Bigger Picture Focus: Focus is kept on the bigger picture, by not being involved in the hands-on maintenance or systems operation of the equipment.
6. Overall Technical Leadership: Provide overall technical leadership for the sport and the necessary strategic direction to match all technical rules & policies.
This type of role is very common in motorsport from technical suppliers - be it powertrain suppliers, tyre manufacturers, and especially single-make manufacturers - and will pay dividends in preventing any technical catastrophes and ensuring a healthy and competitive series.
Responsibilities
1. Senior Technical Leadership: Take ultimate responsibility for all technical matters as the Teams' principal point of contact and provide insight using personal engineering knowledge.
2. Team Organization: Lead and organise all equipment departments, and ensure alignment across all Teams.
3. Fault Review Process: Implement and lead a Fault Review Process, whereby:
1. All issues experienced are documented and distributed in a written report to all stakeholders no later than 2 days after an event;
2. Includes details of each fault's immediate diagnosis and the work that took place;
3. Includes details of proposed next steps and timeframes for any required investigation and engineering analysis (Fault Investigation);
4. Reviewed during Technical Working Group meetings with the Teams, 3 days after an event.
4. Information Oversight: Oversee all information documentation and distribution to Teams & stakeholders.
5. Supplier Management: Effective supplier relationship management to ensure; updates are rolled out on time, spare parts are always available, suppliers held accountable for any issues.
6. Budgetary Responsibility: Necessary budgetary responsibility to resolve/implement technical matters quickly and effectively.
