Volunteer to Career Ward Support - Ward 5, West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven
Ward 5 is a 30-bedded medical ward caring for patients with a range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
The Volunteer to Career programme enables you to complete essential mandatory training, complete 60 hours on the ward, and an opportunity to complete your Care Certificate. On successful completion of this programme, you will be interviewed to join our Bank register as a Casual Healthcare Assistant.
What is the Volunteer to Career (VtC) programme?
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with Inspira, who are leading employability experts providing free professional careers advice and guidance across Cumbria, to deliver the Volunteer to Career Programme. This initiative aims to address staffing shortages in the NHS by actively encouraging volunteers to pursue a career in Healthcare.
The programme is funded from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and is therefore only open to applicants who reside within the Cumberland Council boundary.
Who is eligible to apply for the VtC programme?
The VtC programme is open to anyone interested in a career within Health and Social Care.
Volunteers should be able to commit to at least 60 hours for a minimum of 6 months, be over 18 years old, have the right to work in the UK, and be ready to undergo recruitment checks and training requirements.
Main Duties of the Job
What tasks can this role include?
* Assisting the Nutrition Coordinator to deliver the right meal to each patient and ensuring patients have everything they need once their meal is served.
* Helping patients with physical feeding and drinking when appropriate.
* Improving patient experience by providing a friendly welcome, emotional support, and reassurance to patients and their families.
* Supporting the HCAs and Nurses on the ward, e.g., replenishing drinks, sitting with patients.
* Running errands for patients to purchase newspapers/magazines/snacks as required.
* Assisting with preparing patients for meals and feeding patients.
* Assisting with serving meals.
* Cutting up food and opening packaging.
* Collecting and tidying up following meal service.
* Engaging with patients through conversation, reading, doing crosswords, playing dominoes, etc.
