WMG, a world-renowned department at the University of Warwick, are recruiting a Research Fellow on developing steel scrap value in use (VIU) model. Increasing scrap usage in steel manufacturing including transition to scrap-based EAF steelmaking is a strategy to help decarbonise the steel industry and achieve the steel sustainability. Conventional scrap models tend to provide least cost scrap change to meet the steel specifications, but may not consider process parameters, environmental impact, and other important scrap characteristics, and do not capture the true ‘value in use (VIU)’. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop an improved scrap VIU model by considering the recently improved understanding of the scrap quality including residual elements and their impact on steel manufacturing, other important aspects such as environmental impact, metallurgical understanding and industry know-how.
The role is funded by the EPSRC Future Steel Manufacturing Research Hub ( You will work with leading, multidiscipline academics from different universities and industry experts and carry out impactful research.
