We are currently recruiting for a Workshop and Hire Manager to join our most northerly branch in Kirkwall, Orkney.
You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day work activities in the Workshop along with overseeing the Hire Division. This will be a fully hands-on technical role, meaning that the manager will be part of the repair team and capable of servicing, diagnosing and repairing all types of plant equipment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ensure that all Workshop and Hire activities are conducted in an efficient and timely manner through staff and rota planning and allocating work to the team according to skills and priorities.
2. Monitor staff performance and deal with any issues in accordance with company procedures.
3. Approve timesheets and holiday/absence requests in the absence of the branch manager.
4. Develop, create and/or review standard operating procedures and ensure that all repairs are carried out in accordance with those procedures and in conjunction with the Servicing Policy.
5. Maintain contact with customers as required to keep them informed of progress of repairs.
6. Provide specialist technical advice and training to staff in the relevant techniques, drawing upon considerable depth of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise.
7. Develop and implement cost effective workshop processes.
8. Ensure accurate records of works are completed and maintained.
9. Ensure a high standard of housekeeping practices are maintained within the department.
10. Carry out pre-delivery inspections.
11. Diagnose faults and undertake repairs making sure that the highest standards are maintained.
12. Carry out precision measuring and testing of equipment, following clearly defined procedures.
13. Maintain tools, plant and equipment to ensure that they are always suitable for use.
14. Oversee the Parts Department to ensure that all parts are ordered for customer equipment in a timely manner.
15. Oversee the Hire Desk to ensure that the Company Hire Policy is being adhered to.
16. Responsible for the rolling stock take of Branch hire equipment.
17. Ensure that the Hire Association of Europe Terms and Conditions are being followed.
18. Report and discuss any issues with the Branch manager and Divisional Hire and Service Manager.
19. In conjunction with Sales Managers and the Parts and Hire Team Leader, develop new sales for the hire business and enhance the existing customer base.
Skills and Experience
1. Experience of supervising and guiding a team of workshop technicians is essential.
2. Must have a vocational qualification, e.g. HND/HNC and/or SVQ Level 3 in mechanical engineering (or equivalent) with significant relevant work experience.
3. Must have an understanding of Hire and Service processes.
4. Must be IT literate and have familiarity with computer packages, e.g. Microsoft Office.
5. Ability to work under time pressures.
6. Able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to respond positively to new challenges and change.
8. Able to demonstrate flexibility to achieve completion of tasks.
9. Sound organisational and administrative skills, including managing time effectively.
10. The ability to deal confidently with people with clear and effective communication skills both verbally and written.
Applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK and must live within a daily commutable distance of Kirkwall.
This role is 40 hours per week Monday to Friday plus a Saturday morning rota but may require some flexibility in order to complete tasks.
