As the driving force behind our coding standards, you'll use your expertise to develop both internal training programmes and deliver income-generating NHS England Approved courses to external organisations. You'll join a department that translates approximately 15,000 inpatient episodes per month into accurate clinical data that directly impacts national tariff reimbursement, healthcare planning, and national policy development.
This Band 6 position offers significant professional development, with opportunities to design innovative training approaches using MS Office 365 and digital solutions. You'll work alongside a dedicated team of coding professionals whilst providing guidance, and instruction to trainee coders. Main duties of the job
In this critical role, you'll:
* Manage and deliver the clinical coding training service both internally and externally to the Trust, including National Clinical Coding courses that generate additional income
* Design and continually develop the local training programme for trainees and established coders, creating specialty-specific workshops and bespoke training sessions
* Provide guidance, instruction, and mentorship for trainees, monitoring their development through structured assessment and providing guidance through complex coding scenarios
* Create and maintain the departmental policy portfolio, leading on yearly reviews and implementing innovative approaches for delivery
* Participate actively in the department's quality assurance programme, conducting specialist coding research to resolve complex coding queries
* Communicate complex coding rules to a wide range of stakeholders, from clinical coders to senior clinicians and corporate colleagues
* Utilise your advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding classifications to deliver training that exceeds national standards
* Work collaboratively with the Deputy Head of Clinical Coding to maintain NHS England Approved Trainer status and contribute to departmental throughput

Education, Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
* Holds the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) with Accredited Clinical Coder status
* Is an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer
* Degree level education or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
* Has completed the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course within the last 12 months
Experience and Knowledge Required
Essential criteria
* Can demonstrate 'standards exceeded' coding accuracy levels as set out in the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)
* Experience of designing and delivering formal and informal training materials to wide audiences
* Knowledge of HRGs
* Knowledge of national benchmarking systems relevant to clinical coding e.g.CHKS/HED and metrics such as SHMI/HSMR
* Knowledge and experience in applying HR policies and procedures

DBS Checks
Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role.
