At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision in the new Swindon Plan is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.
Your next role
We are looking for individuals to join our Travel Service as a Casual Passenger Assistant. The team is based within Children’s Services, supporting individuals with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).
Passenger Assistants are responsible for the direct supervision of Children & Young People (CYP) travelling on SEND Transport, ensuring the safety, safeguarding, and well-being of passengers during their journey.
About You
You will possess the ability to establish a rapport and build relationships with passengers and their parents and carers. Having a patient and calm disposition and being emotionally resilient if faced with a difficult situation is key for this role. This role is one of the most important within the Council as you will be the main point of contact between home and school/provision.
Flexibility to cover routes at short notice, dependent on the needs of the service, is essential.
You will receive on-the-job training including basic paediatric first aid, behaviour management, and safeguarding training. Dependent upon the allocation of work, you may also receive additional specialist training which may include Autism Awareness or specific medical needs training.
As part of our commitment to build a better Swindon, we have developed an Independent Travel Hub that aims to promote independence by training our Children and Young People to travel safely and independently across the town. There will be opportunities for you as a Passenger Assistant to support some of this work should you wish to do so, and full training will be provided to you.
Experience of working in an educational setting would be desirable but not essential.
From your passion for working with young people, you’ll be a key individual in our service and we’ll be even better with you.
We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. This role will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
Your next package
Please see our Rewards and Benefits offer for more details.
As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work-life balance.
For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions, and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, revitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.
