We are seeking a technical specialist who is enthusiastic about the work of the Biological Records Centre (BRC) in capturing, visualising, and sharing large-scale and long-term biodiversity datasets to underpin research. The main focus of this role is to provide technical oversight of citizen science infrastructure, supporting the work of BRC and interacting closely with other technical and research staff at UKCEH.
This includes taking on the role of product manager for Indicia tools and associated mobile applications and websites that support national citizen science programmes, such as iRecord, the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS), the National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS), and the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (UK PoMS).
You’llalso play a technicalrole in enhancing UKCEH’s web-based platforms, ensuring they are effective, secure, and user-friendly. This role therefore requires both technical expertise and organisational skills to prioritise tasks effectively and adapt to evolving project needs. You’ll work independently on specific tasks, take the lead in managing activities, and supportcolleagues, while also contributing to wider research and technology initiatives.
Your main responsibilities will include:
6. Managing and prioritising multiple web development projects efficiently
7. Developing and maintaining web applications and platforms to support environmental research
8. Translating scientific and technical requirements into functional web solutions
9. Ensuring web services are robust, secure, and scalable
10. Collaborating with researchers and stakeholders to design user-friendly digital tools
11. Identifying and solving technical challenges with innovative solutions
12. Contributing to reports, publications, and funding proposals
13. Supporting and mentoring colleagues in web development best practices
14. Keeping up to date with the latest technologies and trends in web development
For the role of Website Developer,we’re looking for somebody who has:
15. A degree in web development, software engineering, or a related field OR substantial relevant experience
16. Adaptability and problem-solving mindset, with a track record of technical innovation
17. Strong organisational skills to prioritise multiple tasks effectively
18. Strong technical skillsin some relevant technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Drupal Content Management System, database management
19. Experience in building, maintaining, orimproving web applications
20. Ability to translate complex scientific needs into practical web solutions
21. Experience communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
22. Awareness of Health, Safety, and Environmental considerations in web-based data management
