Position: - DRIVER/OPERATOR /FITTER Division: - Rail Services Location: - National Reporting to: - Team Leader/Regional Operations Manager Purpose of the Role To drive, operate, repair and maintain ¿on track¿ machines in a safe manner, in accordance with the Competency Based Standards for Operator Driver Fitter Maintainers, and in accordance with the Colas Railway Safety Case Key Tasks Training will be given where required
1. Responsible for booking on and off duty at the time and place directed by rosters, weekly orders.
2. Report fit for duty (physically, emotionally and mentally);
3. Wear personal protective clothing ( as supplied;
4. Maintain clear and open communications, verbal and written, with Rugby Control Room (Help Desk);
5. Work to a safe and competent standard;
6. Carry out emergency procedures as and when required;
7. Undertake any other duties as directed by the Team Leader, Operations Managers or Control Room Staff;
8. Liaise with Control Room / Operations Managers to gather information relevant to worksites, when required.
9. Liaise with Control Room / Operations Managers in the event of vehicle breakdown or accident, when required.
10. Liaise with Control Room / Operations Managers regarding for cause drug screening requests, when required.
11. Ensure that written communication is performed and all necessary paperwork and administrative duties are fulfilled.
12. Complete and send all necessary and correct paperwork to Rail Services
13. Ensure machine is maintained to the required standard and kept in a clean and tidy condition
14. When carrying out HGD, ensure all reports are completed at the end of each shift and passed onto the Control Desk and at the end of each week all hard copies are sent into Rugby (to include DWR, ALC files, if an incident takes place; all required information and photo¿s).
15. When required, liaise with maintenance department with regard to machine servicing, repairs, faults and spares.
16. When required, ensure detailed reports are submitted from machine crew to the maintenance department regarding faults arising from shift.
17. When carrying out HGD, act as a liaison with on-site customers.
18. Good knowledge of procedures regarding route learning and route retention and training.
19. Submit timely/accurate/ detailed reports on all on track incidents (including infrastructure damage.

Role Specification Training will be given where required Driving
29. Obtain any relevant late notice information from the Control Room (Help Desk) at Rugby at the beginning of each shift;
30. Responsible for absorbing and retaining knowledge of traction, routes, rules and regulations, and operating notices, maintain and update publications as required;
31. Sign, be in possession of, and read all notices and publications effecting Driver route knowledge;
32. Responsible for unsupervised safe movement of machines and in accordance to rules and regulations;
33. Able to act and adjust driving techniques accordingly to suit prevailing conditions, weather and rail conditions;
34. Be vigilant in observing all signals applicable to train and machine movements and immediately report any irregularities to the signalman concerned;
35. Seek explanation from the signalman when there is a delay and establish reason(s) for the delay. Communicate this information to relevant the people;
36. Responsible for reporting to Network Rail in the most expeditious manner, normally via the signalman, any safety of the line incident so that action may be taken and protection may be put into place;
37. Responsible for personal route learning and refreshing;
38. Responsible for reminding management of the need to perform personal driving assessment once a year;
39. Responsible for reminding management of the need to perform personal rules and regulation certification every two years;
40. When Drivers meet the Colas Rail DOO standed, Drivers will be expected to perform DOO duties.
41. Conduct all pre-start safety checks using appropriate daily and weekly check lists;
42. Communicate with site customer;
43. Respond to, and if possible, fix service faults and failures;
44. When Operator Driver Maintainer cannot personally fix machine, then he is responsible to help and assist ¿Fitter¿ to repair and fix the machine;
45. Report and log all service faults and failures immediately both in writing and verbally to the maintenance Team Leader and Rugby Control Desk (Help Desk);
46. Operate ¿on tack machines¿ (OTM) in accordance with Railway Standards and in possessions to the instructions of the customer¿s machine controller / Track Quality Supervisor (TQS) and Controller of Site Safety (COSS);
47. Report mileage and point numbers completed against planned output;
48. Begin filling out the DWR (Daily work return) and send it off to Rugby at the end of week. When required.
49. Use spill kits to reduce the environmental effect of any oil spills and report any spills to the Rugby Control Desk;
50. Shut down machine safely;
51. Carry out daily and weekly maintenance and safety checks and assist Fitter staff when fixing a machine breakdown or problem;
52. Carry out certain aspects of the monthly maintenance as specified in the maintenance schedule.
53. ¿ Maintaining duties are currently only being partially fulfilled and need to be assessed in line with the role and responsibilities of Fitters. Repairs that fall under ¿safety critical
Fitter
54. Only carry out safety critical tasks that you have been trained passed as competent to perform.
55. Carry out scheduled machine maintenance on Colas fleet.
56. Carry out on-site and follow up repairs to machines.
57. Assist Specialists Fitters with machine repairs.
58. Complete and send all necessary and correct paperwork to Rail Services
59. Liaise with maintenance department with regard to machine servicing, repairs, faults and spares. When required
