What's involved with this role: Principal Road Safety Engineer Reference no: Gloucestershire 526613 Pay Rate: up to £52,805.00 per annum max 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours Permanent City: Gloucester In this role, you will lead and support a team dedicated to reducing road traffic casualties across Gloucestershire. You’ll manage road safety schemes, analyse collision data, review highway designs, and carry out audits, all while driving forward casualty reduction targets. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, you’ll deliver innovative, sustainable road safety solutions and promote safe travel for all road users. You'll also mentor and guide team members, supporting their development and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing environment. Key duties: Lead the day-to-day delivery of road safety measures in line with local and national policy, including the County Council’s Road Safety Policy. Collaborate with Road Safety, TRO, and Traffic Engineering teams to implement strategies that support casualty reduction targets. Develop and maintain effective partnerships through the Road Safety Partnership, supporting joint safety initiatives. Analyse collision data, identify trends, and lead feasibility studies and design proposals to improve road safety. Manage road safety schemes throughout their lifecycle, ensuring proper consultation, engagement, and compliance with council processes. Key requirements: Have the following qualifications/ Memberships: HND in Civil Engineering or higher OR Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience as a Road Safety/Civil Engineer. Successful completion of Road Safety Audit Training (RoSPA approved or equivalent). Incorporated or Chartered status with the MCIHT or equivalent. Member – MSoRSA or equivalent. Project Management Qualification or equivalent experience. Knowledge and appreciation of the Safe System. Expert knowledge of road safety including requirements for ensuring highway design meets standards and guidance and provides safe solutions for all road users. Experience in managing colleagues and projects. Experience of monitoring budgets and reporting their status. Project management skills Be able to undertake the role of Team Leader in Road Safety Audits. Be able to use AutoCad and associated design software such as for traffic signs and road marking design.
