Nero Energy is a fast-growing consultancy committed to accelerating the UK’s transition to net zero. We deliver cutting-edge energy, sustainability, and carbon solutions to clients across sectors—from education, public sector and construction to corporate organisations.
As we scale, we are seeking a commercially aware and operationally sharp Head of Finance and Operations to lead all finance functions and help build robust operational systems that support sustainable, compliant, and efficient growth.
Role Overview
This is a senior leadership position responsible for managing Nero’s finance and core operational infrastructure. You will oversee all financial planning and reporting, manage risk and compliance frameworks, and help shape scalable, best-in-class systems across the business.
We’re looking for someone who blends detail-oriented financial management with a strategic mindset and the ability to drive cross-functional operations—from commercial processes to legal compliance and company governance.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the company’s financial strategy, planning, forecasting and risk management.
* Own and improve all financial reporting, budgeting, P&L and cash flow forecasting.
* Manage month-end and year-end processes with support from external accountants.
* Oversee tax, VAT, R&D claims, payroll and pension compliance.
* Partner with senior leadership on pricing strategy, financial modelling and funding strategy.
Project P&L Oversight & Commercial Support
* Work closely with the CEO, Director and Head of Projects to monitor and manage individual project-level P&Ls.
* Support project budgeting, resourcing forecasts, margin analysis, and financial risk identification.
* Introduce and maintain tools and dashboards for project cost tracking, delivery efficiency, and profitability reporting.
* Ensure project revenue recognition aligns with delivery milestones and contractual terms.
* Provide financial insights that support strategic project prioritisation and capacity planning.
Operational Leadership
* Streamline and scale business operations to support growth—optimising systems, tools and reporting processes.
* Build out and manage efficient contract administration, billing, and time recording systems.
* Identify, evaluate and implement operational software platforms (e.g. CRM, project delivery, finance tools).
* Oversee commercial contracts, client onboarding, NDAs and supplier agreements.
Compliance & Governance
* Lead on all internal policies (HR, ISO 9001, data protection).
* Ensure regulatory compliance across finance, corporate governance, and statutory obligations.
* Act as the liaison with legal and regulatory partners on matters including GDPR, Companies House, insurance and risk.
* Prepare board packs and support board-level governance and decision-making processes.
What We’re Looking For
* Proven experience in a senior finance or finance/operations hybrid leadership role.
* Strong track record managing business finances within a consultancy, technical, or B2B services environment.
* Experience building financial controls, scaling systems, and managing growth-stage company operations.
* Solid understanding of UK financial, tax, payroll, and corporate compliance requirements.
* Comfortable working across functions—able to balance hands-on financial rigour with high-level commercial insight.
Nice to Have
* Experience in professional services, sustainability, construction or engineering sector.
* Exposure to ESG reporting, impact measurement or grant/compliance funding mechanisms (e.g. Innovate UK, PSDS).
* Experience with Xero, Dext, and other cloud-based accounting platforms.
* Familiarity with ISO standards (9001, 14001, 27001) or similar quality and compliance frameworks.
Benefits
* Help shape the operational foundation of a purpose-driven, fast-growing business.
* Work with a team focused on innovation, impact, and long-term climate goals.
* Hybrid, flexible working with autonomy and trust.
* Competitive salary, bonus.
* A strong culture of work life balance.
* Growth-focused culture with values rooted in integrity, sustainability, and collaboration.
