RESPONSIBLE TO : SENCo
WORK PATTERN (FTE) : Term time Monday to Friday 8.40 - 4 pm (3 days per week) 8.40-2 pm (1 day per week) 8.40-5 pm (1 day per week).
5 paid INSET days per year.
Job purpose
* To carry out the professional duties of a SEND Learning Support Assistant across the age ranges specified and following the school's policies under the direction of the SENCo.
* To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching staff to support the delivery of quality learning and teaching and to help raise standards of achievement for all pupils.
* Work may be carried out in the classrooms or outside the main teaching area, including within Forest School and the wider school grounds.
Main responsibilities
1. Support for Pupils:
* Develop an understanding of various special needs such as ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia etc.
* Provide supervised support to ensure safety and access to learning activities.
* Assist pupils in understanding instructions, using equipment, concentrating on tasks, and meeting physical needs.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Passports.
* Contribute to EHCPs (Education, Health, and Care Plans) for pupils in the class you are supporting.
* Plan and deliver interventions for pupils in the class, either independently or with guidance.
* Support pupils with a sensory break, if required.
* Support transitions where appropriate.
* Facilitate attendance at lunchtime clubs, if required.
* Support with invigilation and access arrangements (scribe, reader, prompt, rest breaks).
2. Support for Teachers:
* Assist in planning support for pupils in the class.
* Monitor pupil responses and record achievement.
* Provide regular feedback to teachers and contribute to progress records.
* Communicate with parents/carers, if appropriate and directed by the teacher.
* Support administrative tasks and classroom activities.
* Adapt teaching resources as required.
* Carry out in-class marking as requested by the teacher.
* Record where support has been provided.
* Maintain a neat and attractive classroom environment, such as supporting learning displays.
3. Support for the SENCo/Deputy SENCo:
* Assist in the preparation of Annual Review paperwork.
* Attend Annual Reviews, as required.
* Contribute to external agency-requested forms.
* Maintain tidiness and good order in the Haven.
* Rotate activities in the Haven to ensure pupils have a range of games or tasks to do.
* Support pupils in appointments where necessary.
4. Support for the School:
* Comply with safeguarding, health, safety, and confidentiality procedures.
* Contribute to the school ethos and collaborate with other professionals.
* Attend relevant meetings and liaise with team members.
* Participate in reviews of pupil progress.
* Undertake daily break time and lunchtime duties to support pupils during unstructured times.
* Supervise prep or run an After School Activity once a week (or pro rata equivalent).
* Attend school fayres, shows and other extracurricular activities, where possible.
5. Safeguarding:
* Be familiar with school safeguarding policies and reporting procedures.
6. Other Professional Requirements:
* Engage in the school community and uphold its mission and ethos.
* Flexibility to undertake additional duties as required and requested by SENCo and SLT.
Person specification
Experience
• Experience working with SEND children of relevant age
Qualification/training
• Level 2 for Learning Support Assistants or equivalent qualification or willingness to work towards a relevant qualification.
• Training in the relevant learning strategies, e.g. literacy
Knowledge/skills
• Ability to use ICT effectively to support learning
• An understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice
• A general understanding of the National Curriculum and other relevant learning programmes/strategies
• Awareness of the benefits of outdoor learning and a willingness to support this area of the curriculum
• A basic understanding of the principles of child development and learning processes
• Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
• Ability to relate well to children and adults
• Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities
• Ability to comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality, data protection and equal opportunities
