We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader for the high-profile role of Director General for Economic, Social and Environmental Statistics (ESEG). About the Role The Director General for ESEG is a high-profile position responsible for leading all aspects of economic, social, and environmental statistics at ONS. This role involves directing the delivery of the UK’s most important statistics about the economy, serving as an authoritative and credible public face of economic, social, and environmental statistics and analysis, overseeing the modernization of the collection and communication of these statistics, and devising and implementing strategic approaches to their production and dissemination. Key Responsibilities As a key member of the National Statistician’s top-level executive leadership group, you will be regularly invited to, and held accountable by, the UK Statistics Authority Board, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee, other Parliamentary scrutiny bodies, and across Whitehall. You will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships on economic statistics with HM Treasury, the Bank of England, the Office for Budgetary Responsibility, and other key users and opinion formers. Additionally, you will play a key role in deputising for the National Statistician on matters of economic and social statistics both domestically and internationally. Your Impact You will provide enterprise leadership and direction to ensure consistently high-quality, relevant economic statistics and analysis are produced by ONS, including the National Accounts, prices, labour market, and business statistics. You will lead the transformation of statistics on the UK Labour Market to ensure they meet users’ needs and instil an outward-facing approach across your group that anticipates, understands, and responds to user needs. Building confidence, trust, and credibility among users, you will provide an authoritative voice for economic statistics and analysis, personally explaining economic statistics to users including Government, Parliament, the media, and the public. You will develop a significant suite of statistics and analysis, including regular analytical outputs and bespoke analyses tackling individual topics to drive forward work across government missions.
