Due to a significant increase in commercial contracts legal support required across the Council, we are looking to appoint a Legal Assistant in our Commercial Contracts team. While gaining commercial law skills in a friendly and supportive environment, the post holder will provide support to members of the team who advise and represent the Council on commercial law matters.
The work can be complex and challenging including procurement matters, commercial contracts, grant agreements and working on a number of diverse and interesting projects and services.
Whilst not essential, it is desirable that the candidate holds a minimum degree in law (i.e. LLB) or equivalent and/or has demonstrable experience of working as a legal assistant, paralegal or in a legal office.
Duties of the post include drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial contracts and procurement processes (under supervision, where appropriate) as well as general contract administration and post-completion matters. The post holder will also be required to carry out legal research from time to time, as well as keeping up to date with current legislation and practices. All legal work carried out will be proportionate to the skillset of the candidate.

The candidate must be willing to work in the area of commercial contract law. You should be highly motivated, enthusiastic, able to work effectively as part of a team, and have the ability to understand legal issues and provide jargon-free advice. The candidate must be highly organised and able to work independently (with supervision), under pressure and to tight deadlines.

Our employees are currently undertaking a hybrid of home working and office-based working. We anticipate that working remotely will be required for a minimum of two days per week as part of this role and up to three days per week will be required at your office base, which will be in central Halifax (one of the office days will take place on a Thursday).
