Who we are
As the largest provider of 16-19 study programmes in the West Midlands, The Sandwell Colleges are committed to empowering every learner to achieve their full potential. Our outcomes for learners, both young people and adults, are above national rates, and we provide a high level of pastoral and wrap-around enrichment and support rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2022.
The Sandwell Colleges have a clear mission: to deliver high-quality education and training that improves life chances while driving the economic prosperity of learners, communities, and businesses.
Addressing the region’s evolving skills gap ensures that learners develop the knowledge, technical abilities, and professional competencies needed to excel in today’s competitive job market.
The Sandwell Colleges is a single entity made up of three colleges and a number of skills hubs – Cadbury Sixth Form, Central St Michael Sixth Form, and the Sandwell FE College – as well as our STEM and Engineering Hub in West Bromwich, a City Centre training hub called Tomorrow’s People, and two new developments at Midland Metropolitan Hospital site and in Cradley Heath.
About the roles
With our new CEO & Principal, Lisa Capper MBE, having joined us in November, we have entered into a new and exciting phase of our journey with a refreshed vision and a soon-to-be-published new strategic plan for 2025 onwards. This plan sets out our ambition for learners, deepened connectivity and impact with and through our partners and stakeholders, and wider support for our communities.
Strong governance is a key element of any successful College. Governors are collectively responsible for the strategic oversight of their College, leading the drive for improved standards in teaching and learning. They are also the guardians of large amounts of public funds, with responsibility for ensuring efficient and effective use of College resources.
The appointment of a Chair
As our new Chair, you will guide our strategic direction whilst leading and supporting other board members to ensure they can actively participate in strategic conversations and decision-making processes. You will bring prior board experience – perhaps as a Chair or Committee Chair or member of a Board in a similar size or complex setting – and an understanding of the processes, procedures, and expectations related to good governance.
You will lead our governing body to ensure the College meets its statutory and regulatory responsibilities with regard to governance and compliance while ensuring that the organisation mitigates risks and ensures excellent outcomes for our learners.
The appointment of Governors
We are seeking two influential and commercially astute governors with strategic expertise in curriculum and quality or corporate services to join our Board. Candidates for each of these roles will need to be successful leaders with experience working in similarly large and complex organisations.
Candidates for these roles will need to have a professional background and demonstrable expertise in one of the following areas:
* For the Chair’s role – Governance experience of a medium to large organisation is beneficial, or similar governance level or board experience
* Qualified finance professional
* Leadership experience gained from a large local employer
* Curriculum & quality of education
Please note that the candidate appointed with expertise in curriculum & quality will have an additional responsibility as a Link Governor for safeguarding, so it is important that candidates with this expertise are willing to take on this additional duty.
If you are excited by the opportunity to apply your strategic expertise to a highly rewarding role in an organisation with a clear social mission, we would love to hear from you.
We very much welcome applicants from ethnic minority communities, a range of backgrounds and/or a commitment to inclusion.
