The Opportunity:
Are you an experienced Systems Engineering leader, able to guide teams? Are you able to coach and develop the Systems Engineers of the future? Are you passionate about the better exploitation of digital technologies and techniques as this domain matures?
The Chief Systems Engineer acts as the focal point for Systems Engineering Governance and ensures our Systems Engineering capability trends in a positive direction. The role will provide a clear point of contact on Systems Engineering capability for the area you are in and the Head of Systems Engineering.
Leonardo has significant interest in developing our approaches to and exploitation of digital technologies, how we disseminate information and demonstrate capability. We have an opportunity to develop approaches based on our extensive and diverse data from our sensor products.
The focus of this role is to provide direction, guidance and expertise to ensure:
1. Our systems engineering team define the problem completely
2. Our teams reuse techniques and artefacts across the portfolio of projects
3. Our teams manage complexity through architecting our systems well
4. Our teams predict and mitigate emergent behaviours when operating at a system or system of systems level
5. Our projects create and enact the correct verification and validation strategy
6. Ensuring that we identify and exploit network effect through better data sharing
As a Chief Systems Engineer, you will influence each product, its technical direction and our customers' satisfaction. We are looking for someone passionate about our products, with a systems-thinking approach and proven experience of forming and leading high performing teams. You will thrive in dynamic environments, with the ability to make decisions quickly under pressure and set a clear technical vision for the team.
Given the nature of the work at this level we are able to offer custom working, however some on-site working is expected.
What you'll do
As the Chief Systems Engineer, you will:
1. Act as a point of contact for all things Systems Engineering within your area to the Head of Systems Engineering and VP of Engineering.
2. Be a coach in the art of systems engineering, particularly within a data-centric context.
3. Lead the development of a data strategy and data management strategy.
4. Ensure programmes capture the views and needs of all our stakeholders, covering the full lifecycle and different stakeholder types.
5. Champion Design for Excellence (DfX) concepts for Systems Engineering.
6. Act as the focal point for systems engineering governance, supporting Lifecycle Management (LCM) activities related to systems engineering such as bids, design reviews and audits.
7. Champion innovative approaches and modern techniques across the full lifecycle.
8. Hold quarterly threat and mitigation reviews for your area.
9. Represent Leonardo within Systems Engineering bodies and groups of interest, such as INCOSE.
10. Identify trends across your area, capturing and sharing lessons learned to improve the quality and efficiency of future work.
11. Work with the Head of Systems Engineering and project stakeholders to optimise the skills and capability profile across the sector.
12. Enable and optimise collaboration across engineering disciplines within your area of influence.
13. Deliver an agile approach to systems engineering, building a culture of experimentation and failing fast.
14. Understand what lies beyond our black boxes, promoting how digital technologies can be used to improve our systems approach.
15. Collaborate with your peers in similar roles across the UK to promote a culture of continual learning and improvement, acting as a change agent for systems engineering.
16. Identify and develop your own Systems Engineering specialism, becoming a recognised expert across the Digital Products CDT / Electronics division.
What we're looking for
Ideally, we are looking for a systems thinker, someone with:
1. Experience in applying governance and guidance on Systems Engineering LCM process.
2. Experience in eliciting stakeholder expectations.
3. Experience in creating and defining architectures.
4. Experience in managing and collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders.
5. Experience of developing and delivering AI or ML powered solutions, services or products.
6. Proven leadership and decision-making skills in a high complexity, dynamic environment at a senior level.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proven ability to build trust and respect at different levels.
8. Experience of integration, with an understanding of the resultant issues, cost and schedule implications, and potential mitigations.
9. Experience of people leadership, development of peoples skills and sharing knowledge.
10. Tenacity and determination, with a desire to deliver outputs and results.
