Role Overview
The Head of Software Engineering reports to the CTO and is a crucial position within our Engineering Management Team that will be pivotal to our growth plans.
The successful candidate will oversee the software function and be responsible for software application development. They will set the approach to ensure the software is designed, built, and tested to the highest standards using effective coding principles in line with industry best practices. They will provide strategic, technical, and operational leadership to the engineering team, ensuring efficient and timely delivery of software products.
As a key member of the Engineering Management Team, the role will support the development of our product strategies, overseeing the roadmap and delivery of high-quality software, as well as improving the working practices within the software and engineering teams, suggesting new ways of working and continual improvement of our methods and processes. They will be an individual who focuses on collaborative and impactful software solutions.
As a naturally forward-thinking Manager, they will collaborate and lead a team of highly skilled professionals who are passionate about software engineering.
Key Accountabilities
* Supported by the technical leads, ensuring software is well designed and of high quality from design through to release, using industry best practices.
* Support the Project Manager/Project Lead in developing project roadmaps, understanding delivery time scales, and communicating these throughout the design process.
* Identify technical risks/opportunities and proactively develop plans to mitigate and realise them.
* Line management responsibility.
* Keeping abreast of new technologies and working practices and effectively communicating these along with the associated opportunities and risks within the software and wider management teams.
Our ideal candidate:
This role is perfect for an experienced leader in Embedded Software Engineering with a successful history of developing and managing a software department. While prior experience in the Sat Comms, RF, or Software Defined Radio industries is preferred, it is not a strict requirement. We are looking for a leader enthusiastic about cultivating and advancing software functions.
To be successful in this role, you will need the following skills, experience and qualities:
* A proven leader in the field of Software Engineering with demonstrable experience in leading a software function/team.
* Solid experience in developing a team both from a technical skills perspective and in the ability to write embedded software on various platforms to support and coach throughout the software development cycle, staying hands-on and guiding the team through technical challenges.
* Proven experience in managing project/development cycles, ensuring effective outcomes and cultivating an innovative work environment.
* A motivated and innovative leader with high personal accountability and ambition.
* Ability to lead the growth and development of the Software Engineering function through effective hiring, training, mentoring, and retention of top talent.
Location
Hybrid remote and flex working are available for this role.
The Engineering and Software Teams are spread across our offices in Hereford and Rickmansworth, requiring monthly travel between the two locations.
