Job overview
The postholder will act as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the Children’s Speech and Language team. Using specialist knowledge and experience, the post holder will be responsible for assessing, treating, and managing their own caseload of patients/clients in a variety of settings, providing an accurate clinical diagnosis and implementation of a specialist treatment plan whilst maintaining associated records. To advise and provide clinical support to other therapists/staff on SLT issues.
Main duties of the job
1. Work with a paediatric caseload to assess and review level of need and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and time management principles. This will be in a variety of environments within the community e.g. community clinics, special schools etc. This may involve direct therapy or the provision of programs to be undertaken by others.
2. Have in-depth knowledge, understanding, and management of a wide range of speech, language, and communication difficulties to have the necessary skills for the management of a range of speech, language, and communication (SLC) difficulties. Be responsible for assessment and diagnosis of newly acquired speech, language, and swallowing problems in community settings as appropriate.
3. Effectively communicate sensitive information in an understandable format to children and young people and other professionals in a supportive manner to ensure quality of patient care.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase, and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
