Principal duties to include: Clinical and Technical: Collects, using venepuncture procedures, blood samples from adult patients 18 years and over in a variety of settings, selecting the appropriate equipment for the procedure. Provides a phlebotomy service at designated other settings. Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and patients during the venepuncture procedure. Practices within risk management/ occupational health legislation and CSH procedures, and is aware of potential hazards. Collects samples from patients in high risk categories and is aware of potential hazards. Is able to follow agreed protocols to minimise risk to self and others. Is aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to be maintained during the venepuncture procedure, and makes the decision of appropriate site selection, correct use of tourniquet and selection of blood sample bottles. Is proficient in performing Point of Care capillary sample testing and proceed according to standard operating procedure. Ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Ensures that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department. Is proficient in the use, maintenance and quality control procedures of the departmental equipment. Works to ensure that service performance targets are met by continually assessing priority of own work; taking into account individual needs of the patient. Is fully conversant with and works to relevant departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO standards (International standards organisation). Performs telephone duties that include making and receiving calls from and to the phlebotomy unit, conveying sensitive information to other healthcare professionals, patients and their representatives. Performs additional patient monitoring ( for example but not limited to blood pressure, weight etc) in line with competancies. Provides support to junior members of staff, and encourage best practice. With appropriate training undertake cannulation of patients identified by registered professionals according to the clinical protocol. Role Responsibilities Is willing to undertake and complete a Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support via a CSH specific Learning contract. Works to achieve competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate. Participates in the a personal development programme and works towards identified development needs. To include attendance on mandatory training courses and subsequent updates in line with CSH policy. Communicates effectively with other staff groups both internal and external. To include healthcare professionals, transport, portering services, patients and their representatives. Provides and receives sensitive information from patients and their representatives where empathic skills are required. Includes communication with difficult patients who may have barriers to understanding. Is able to present information accordingly. Able to communicate sensitively where persuasive skills may be necessary Performs administrative tasks, to include activity audits and other audits as required. Ensures efficient use of resources and is aware of stock levels and rotation, storage conditions, batch numbers and expiry dates, thus ensuring the viability of stock used. Ensures appropriate stock levels are maintained in own area of operation, this may include ordering stock. Maintains a clean and safe working environment through good housekeeping practices. This will include disposal of clinical waste, decontamination processes. Is aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety policies, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the senior staff. Resuscitation trained with ability to use CPR techniques. Analytical / Judgmental Skills To manage a range of facts or situations requiring comparison of a range of options - judgements on problems requiring investigation, analysis, e.g. assessment of conditions, etc To provide assistance with the resolution of complaints within the clinical specialty, or sphere of responsibility To be aware of, and act upon or report, when necessary, procedures that are in place to protect vulnerable individuals. To report any accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards or serious untoward incidents in accordance with the agreed procedure. Responsibilities for human resources To attend in service training, mandatory training and other training programmes as required. To participate in the induction of new staff, students, bank and agency staff. To contribute to own personal and performance review and to undertake identified training needs and development. To assist with ensuring that a learning environment is created and maintained for pre-registration students, qualified nurses and healthcare assistants. Provide support for newly appointed phlebotomists, and other internal/external healthcare workers. Information Technology: Is able to use computer system to check email and participate in e-learning Is able to use the GP electronic requesting system and the mobile electronic requesting equipment to collect blood samples. To be competent at using the electronic patient record and ensure patient records are accurate and timely To particiate in data collection and audit when required.
