Role Summary
As Convener you will provide strategic leadership and direction for SSSC and be directly accountable to Scottish Ministers for its efficient and effective delivery of agreed outcomes. The overall role of the Convener, along with the members, is to ensure the SSSC fulfils the aims and objectives set by Scottish Ministers.
The successful appointee will be given the opportunity to participate in training and development designed to help you perform effectively.
Responsibilities
The Convener will work alongside the SSSC Chief Executive and Council Members to discharge the functions of the Council and will be expected to:
1. establish the overall strategic direction and management of change of the SSSC, within the policy, planning and resources framework agreed with Scottish Ministers;
2. ensure that the SSSC complies with all statutory and administrative requirements for the use of public funds;
3. work with other organisations across social services, health, education, regulation and the Scottish Government to ensure a strategic and corporate approach to achieving Ministers’ policy expectations and aims for the SSSC;
4. ensure collective responsibility for decisions of the Council;
5. establish a close relationship of trust with the Chief Executive, providing support and advice while respecting executive responsibility;
6. ensure that all Council members are effectively trained, developed and supported and that their performance is formally reviewed on an annual basis;
7. ensure effective arrangements are in place to provide proper governance; and
8. maintain a focus on strategy and performance by overseeing the preparation and approval of annual, corporate and strategic plans.

REMUNERATION AND TIME COMMITMENT
This position attracts a remuneration rate of £341 per day and the Convener will be expected to give a commitment of a minimum of 2 days a week on council business, some of which may be in the evenings or weekends. As Convener you will also sit as a member on the Board of the Care Inspectorate. This is likely to require a further time commitment of around 2 days per month. This appointment is for 3 years commencing from 1 July 2025.
