Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptist to join our dynamic Orthoptic team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The role will include working across Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals. We provide a full range of sub-speciality clinics including botulinum toxin, adult motility, paediatric, neurology, stroke and oculoplastic. The successful candidate will be working alongside a multidisciplinary team which includes Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Technicians, administrative staff and health care assistants. We provide an Orthoptic led service with two Paediatric Ophthalmology Consultants. This is a full-time permanent role. We are open to considering candidates who may prefer to work part-time, compressed hours and newly qualified Orthoptists (Band5/6 depending on previous experience). The successful candidate will provide Orthoptic, primary school screening and allied services. The clinician will have clinical experience, be able to practice independently but support and advice for the more complex clinical diagnosis will be available as needed. There are potential opportunities to extend your role including Ophthalmology advanced clinical practice (paediatrics), intravitreal injection, stroke, glaucoma and low vision therapy. Main duties of the job KEY SKILLS oDemonstrate significant manual dexterity and speed to ensure accurate result especially in infants and young children. oCounselling skills in emotional and distressing situations. oShow sensitivity, diplomacy and compassion when dealing with staff and patients. oExceptional observation and precision skills. oAbility to communicate effectively with all types of patients including paediatric, elderly, those with learning difficulties and patients whose first language is not English. oConfident working independently and within a team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Orthoptic clinical duties a)Confident in Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and appropriate management of new paediatric and adult patients; as we have an Orthoptic led service, the Orthoptist often is the first point of contact to patients with: i.All cases of strabismus and amblyopia ii.Highly complex congenital or acquired ocular motility disorders iii.Nystagmus iv.Congenital or acquired neurological conditions v.Genetic disorders with associated ocular abnormalities vi.Ocular manifestations of a diagnosed or undiagnosed systemic condition b)To be responsible for Orthoptic assessment and visual behaviour in referrals from specialist services including A&E, neonatal unit, elderly care and paediatric assessment unit; therefore need to be competent in examining patients of all ages with poor cooperation, illiterates, functional visual loss and special education needs/learning difficulties.
