This is a 7PA innovative post created to support our expanding Connective Tissue Disease Service to deliver local and regional specialised commissioned services. The successful applicant will have a higher degree in a relevant research area, have an outstanding record in delivering tertiary level care, and have sufficient experience in supporting phase 2, 3 and 4 clinical trials to allow you to take a lead role in expanding the department's clinical research activity in connective tissue disorders. We are keen to support applicants who wish to develop a research interest, now or in the future, capitalising on our excellent links with the Musculoskeletal Research Group at Newcastle University and associated research groups working in the field at Newcastle University.
Main duties of the job
This role will incorporate fully job planned clinical oversight of our large, busy infusion unit. The post holder will coordinate the department's medical oversight of the service working as part of an MDT comprising senior nurse specialists, prescribing pharmacist, and administrative support. The post holder will oversee training/mentoring of the DCU nursing team, middle grade doctors, and MDT members to ensure the safety and quality of the service provided.
In addition, this post will include responsibility for the long-term follow-up of a small cohort of patients with connective tissue disorders previously under the care of a consultant now retiring. The post includes contribution to the low-frequency rheumatology on-call service for specialty referrals only and management of a small number of inpatients.
Job responsibilities
Clinical:
* Referrals come from Primary Care in Newcastle and surrounding areas, other medical specialties, and orthopaedics
* Tertiary referrals come from a wide geographic area from West Cumbria to Teesside and North to the Scottish Border
* The successful candidate will share responsibility for running and ensuring best practice in our connective tissue disease service
* The post-holder will participate in a consultant non-resident on-call rota for rheumatology and will conduct a ward round with the on-call registrar on Saturdays and Sundays when on call.
Administrative:

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
* Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
* Special skills training in the specialty
* Evidence of participation in clinical trials at sub PI and PI level
* Higher Degree
* GCP certification
Clinical Experience
* Evidence of experience in the specialty
* Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
* Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the specialty
* Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre
Management and Administration Experience
* Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty
* Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines
* An understanding of Clinical Governance
* Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals
