COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS ENGINEER
Title: Communications Systems Engineer
Location: Gloucester, UK
Clearance: Must already hold enhanced UKIC DV Clearance
Overview:
We are looking for a Communications Systems Engineer to help design, integrate, and optimize advanced Software-Defined Radio (SDR) systems for mission-critical environments. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge communication architectures, interface design, and network engineering—making it ideal for someone passionate about enabling the next generation of secure, high-performance communications.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design and consult on scalable, high-performance SDR architectures tailored for complex communication environments, with a focus on resilience, adaptability, and mission readiness.
2. Develop and implement communication interfaces and protocols that ensure robust data flow and system interoperability across varied operational contexts.
3. Design and model efficient network topologies and link budgets to support distributed systems and high-throughput communications across multiple domains.
4. Collaborate with cross-functional hardware and software teams to integrate SDR technologies into broader mission platforms, ensuring seamless operation and performance.
5. Ensure communication systems align with relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE, 3GPP) and operational requirements for interoperability and accreditation.
6. Plan and execute rigorous validation processes, including lab testing and field trials, to verify protocol behavior, interface functionality, and network performance.
7. Engage with RF engineers, software developers, and payload teams to ensure communication systems are effectively embedded into complete system-of-systems solutions.
What We’re Looking For:
1. Must already hold enhanced UKIC DV Clearance
2. Proven experience designing and optimizing SDR-based communication architectures.
3. Deep understanding of communication protocols, encoding schemes, and industry standards (e.g., TCP/IP, IEEE 802, cellular network protocols, FEC).
4. Experience with network topology design, including link budgeting for complex RF systems.
5. Familiarity with the integration of SDR components and supporting infrastructure.
6. Proficiency in network modeling and system design tools.
7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in performance tuning and systems optimization.
8. Experience with real-time communication systems and network monitoring or management tools.
9. Knowledge of OpenCPI, GNU Radio, Python, C/C++, and other SDR development environments.
10. Comfortable working in Linux-based environments and with tools such as GitLab for version control.
11. Background in defence, cyber, or tactical communications systems.
12. Familiarity with interoperability testing, system certification, and network performance analysis.
