Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Quality and Training
A new post is available in the Histopathology Department. This post presents an exciting opportunity to work closely with the quality and training team. The department has a workload of around 70,000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services.
This is an excellent opportunity to work within a committed team of office, laboratory, and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities. The service is expanding Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection and reporting roles, and is progressing towards full digital reporting. We also use CEREBRO specimen tracking system and are replacing most of our specialist laboratory equipment this year.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is required to support the implementation, delivery, and maintenance of the quality management system and such quality initiatives as deemed necessary to achieve and maintain compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation. As specialised staff, you will also be responsible for providing training in all aspects of technical Histology to medical staff, other BMS staff, new entrants, students, Associate Practitioners, and Biomedical Support Workers (BMSW) as necessary. The post holder will be able to work autonomously, set targets without direct supervision, and refer to senior staff as necessary.
This is an opportunity to develop your skills and experience in Histopathology training and quality management.
To assist/deputise for senior BMS staff in the supervision of BMS staff and workload.
An opportunity to gain experience in maintaining and developing the service in line with UKAS ISO15189 standards and to participate in service development and implementation of Lean methodology.

Job responsibilities
* Take charge of a specified area of work, including the Main laboratory as required, supervise non-state registered staff and other BMS staff, and deputise for Band 7 section leaders when necessary.
* Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.
* Assist in the development and maintenance of standards necessary for continuing UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation.
* Carry out quality audits (Horizontal, Vertical, and Examination) of laboratory processes/procedures.
* Assist in the development and implementation of departmental training plans for staff, as required.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC)
* Specialist Diploma from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) or equivalent in histopathology service as a new entrant BMS 1
Experience
* Extensive experience within the field of quality and training
Skills
* In-depth knowledge of the methodologies used within the histopathology service
* Good communication and presentation skills
* Ability to show flexibility by performing multiple tasks
