Design Engineer
Location: Just outside Oxford
Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 (depending on experience)
We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established, family-run engineering business seeking a Design Engineer to join their growing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to take ownership of design projects in a hands-on, production-focused environment.
About the Role:
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Design Engineer will be responsible for the safe and accurate design of hydraulic components and assemblies using SolidWorks (3D CAD). You will play a key role in ensuring the company’s products are designed to exact specifications, supporting both new and existing product lines.
Key Responsibilities:
* Carry out 3D design work using SolidWorks.
* Understand and apply calculations required for accurate and effective design in a production environment
* Develop knowledge of steel grades, seal specifications, and other key materials/components used.
* Liaise directly with customers on design requirements for both new and existing products.
* Support the specification of hydraulic power unit (HPU) components as this area continues to develop.
* Maintain and issue drawings in line with internal drawing office procedures and guidelines.
* Set up processes that account for tooling, fittings, protective equipment, testing, and other production considerations.
* Project manage new designs and prototypes, ensuring all documentation and processes are fully implemented.
* Update and amend historic CAD files as required.
* Collaborate with the HSEQ Manager to address drawing and specification queries, and implement corrective actions as needed.
* Take full ownership of drawings and ensure they meet all specified requirements.
* Mentor and support the Trainee Design Engineer, promoting best practices within the Drawing Office.
* Represent the company at OEM sites across the UK when required to support business development.
What We're Looking For:
* Proven experience using SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD software) in a production environment.
* Strong understanding of engineering principles and calculations.
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks to deadline.
* Clear communicator with both internal teams and external clients.
* Willingness to take ownership of the design process from concept through to production.
* A proactive attitude, with the desire to contribute to continuous improvement.
