Job Description: Environmental and Sustainability Manager
Salary: £45,000-£50,000 per year plus benefits
As the Environmental and Sustainability Manager, you will be working as part of the SHEQ team to support the Head of SHEQ and the Leadership Team. You will provide pro-active leadership on sustainability and environmental issues and promote an enthusiastic and positive commitment to continuous improvement. This includes raising the profile of the company's environmental programmes and sustainability by identifying new opportunities in working with our supply chain on innovation projects to reduce our environmental impacts.
Main Accountabilities:
1. Support and advise Directors, Managers, Supervisors, and Employees regarding any environmental issues, responding to requests for assistance from the bid/business development team and other key functions, as well as supporting sustainability/environmental improvements on key contracts.
2. Responsible for overseeing the environmental performance of the business and delivering our environment strategy and sustainability commitments to our clients, including environmental plans and environmental risk assessments.
3. Periodically visit work locations and project sites to assess/review/inspect compliance levels, exercising the necessary authority to stop work to prevent environmental incidents or compliance breaches.
4. Ensure all relevant legislation and procedures, including legislative changes, are communicated and necessary training is developed to ensure business compliance.
5. Facilitate the Carbon Reduction Plan, overseeing the methods for measuring and reporting carbon improvement performance, liaising with management to highlight environmental risks and opportunities. Gather Carbon data for SECR reports and organize it for verification.
6. Continuously monitor and report on environmental performance, particularly reviewing incidents and 'near miss' reports to ensure appropriate investigations and necessary learning and corrective actions are captured, communicated, understood, and acted upon in a timely manner.
7. Support any external audits and accreditation schemes needed for the Divisional needs, e.g., ISO 9001, 45001, 14001, support NERS, and NHSS 8.
8. Collate environmental KPIs for internal monthly Board reports as well as contract specific environmental reports where required.
9. Manage, coach, and develop team members, supporting individuals to achieve their potential and deliver effective business results. Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks, and undertake on-site coaching.
10. Liaise with key stakeholders on matters of environmental management and sustainability, including clients, subcontractors, regulatory bodies, and other project stakeholders.
11. Lead on documentation and other compliance activities to support the discharge of environmental planning conditions and manage duties associated with biodiversity net gain compliance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. BSc/MSc or relevant equivalent in an Environmental Science or Environmental Management related subject and/or membership of IEMA and experience in a similar role.
2. Experience working in a construction or highway maintenance environment.
3. Full driving license.
4. Strong ICT skills with experience in applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and the Internet.
5. Experience with health and safety management principles and processes and application of ISO 9001/14001.
6. Ability to apply theoretical and practical environmental and sustainability knowledge to a diverse range of situations, contributing to the further development of sustainability systems and working practices.
7. Ability to analyze data, produce management reports, and communicate results and findings to a range of audience types, from layperson to professional/technical.
8. Experience in conducting inspections, audits, incident investigations, and generating reports.
9. Proven ability to plan and prioritize workload and adjust accordingly to reactive situations and events.
10. A knowledge of ecological, archaeological, and environmental law.
