Lead on the pastoral care and safeguarding of students, ensuring their wellbeing is at the heart of every experience About the role Role type: Fixed term, Residential Dates: For course dates between start of July and middle of August 2025 Working pattern: Saturday to Saturday, up to 60 hours per week on a shift pattern with overnight duties. 1 day off per week. Reports to: Course Director The Welfare Manager is a senior member of the on-site team. You will be responsible for overseeing wellbeing, safety and safeguarding across the site for residential students aged 9-12. Main duties Welfare initiatives - Leading initiatives to maintain a safe, supportive and inclusive environment, including responding promptly to issues and advising staff on best practice for promoting wellbeing. Care plans - Coordinating pastoral care to address emotional, social, and behavioural needs. Safeguarding - Primary point of contact for safeguarding concerns on site, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies. Residential duties - Up to 10 hrs per week, as part of the residential team including morning registrations, meal time supervision, curfew checks and overnight phone duty. Staff management - Managing a team of House Parents to ensure high standards of residential care and pastoral support. You’re able to manage a team, to provide consistently high-quality pastoral care. You can quickly respond to welfare concerns, demonstrating sound judgement and sensitivity in difficult situations. You’re comfortable working in a dynamic, residential environment, fostering positive relationships with students and staff. Essential Experience of managing pastoral, welfare, or safeguarding roles in educational or residential settings, with leadership over welfare-related matters. Clear evidence of implementing safeguarding policies effectively and handling sensitive student welfare cases with professionalism and discretion. Proven ability to lead and support a team to ensure consistent, high-quality pastoral care and foster positive student-staff relationships. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, with attention to detail in managing complex welfare responsibilities and resolving issues. Right to work in the UK (we cannot sponsor work visas for this role) Desirable Knowledge of current safeguarding legislation and best practices in student welfare, especially within residential or educational contexts, as well as child development and the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of young people. Experience in international or multicultural environments with awareness of diverse student backgrounds, and handling safeguarding incidents while liaising with external agencies. Familiarity with safeguarding reporting procedures, record-keeping for welfare matters, and working within summer school programs or similar short-term residential education settings.
