It’s an exciting time to join Birmingham City Council. Scrutiny and Committee Services is integral to our improvement driven change agenda, and we are now looking for our new Head of Scrutiny and Committee Services to continue to lead the effective delivery of the work of the team alongside fulfilling the role of the Councils Statutory Scrutiny Officer.
Ideally you would offer a combination of sound democratic practice, the ability to foster positive working relationships with councillors and officers and the willingness and capability to lead the services’ shared change programme.
With a thorough knowledge and appreciation of the issues facing local government and the public sector, you will bring a comprehensive skill set to respond to these issues and provide strategic advice on governance, constitutional, and procedural matters. Using your exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, you will lead the service, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Resilient and robust, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to work under pressure, managing competing demands with a solution focused approach in a political environment. You will also have good diplomacy and negotiation skills and an ability to communicate efficiently and confidently with Council members and officers at all levels, external agencies and the public.
In return, we offer a competitive salary alongside flexible hybrid working arrangements. There is a requirement for officers to attend meetings in person at the Council House or other locations and some occasional evening and weekend working may be needed.
