The Role As Legal Counsel, you will be an integral part of the Central Operations Team, reporting directly to the COO. You will apply your legal expertise and commercial mindset to proactively guide and support teams across the business. Your role will focus on identifying and addressing legal and operational challenges, while helping to build the foundations for sustainable, legally sound commercial growth. You will also play a key role in fostering self-sufficiency within teams, empowering them to navigate legal considerations confidently and effectively. You will own all things legal, successfully supporting, growing, and defending Duel and its legal ecosystem through incredible growth. A key focus will be on streamlining and managing enterprise customer contract review processes, ensuring efficient turnaround times, and enabling the business to close great deals faster and with confidence. Your primary role is to empower others across the business to do their best work, while you remain aware and on-top of managing the business risks being created in the process, enabling them run full steam ahead, at speed. We’re looking for someone who will… Work closely with every team in the business, initially with a particular focus on supporting our People, Operations and Commercial teams as they ramp into their roles and scale, enabling us to do more commercially, of higher quality - faster. Act as a commercial legal generalist who is autonomous, and people-oriented taking ownership of a whole host of valuable legal projects across the entire business to really help drive our next phase of growth. There is no problem that is someone else’s problem - you’re the person who will help us figure out how we can best solve it, in a way that builds the right risk profile for the business. Engage with the end-to-end supplier management, supporting on contract reviews for internal tooling. Ownership of not just whether the TCs are acceptable, but whether the overall adoption of a tool makes sense for us as a business, are all within your remit to form a view on, and to stay close to as implementation begins. Own and optimise the Enterprise customer contract lifecycle, ensuring efficient review, negotiation, and management of high-value agreements. Engage with the end-to-end customer lifecycle, from initial contract review and negotiation to smooth onboarding processes and ongoing legal support for the Sales and Customer Success team. Your work will directly impact deal velocity and customer satisfaction. Build scalable processes and templates to standardise and accelerate our enterprise customer contract turnaround, reducing legal bottlenecks and empowering the sales and commercial teams without increasing legal and business risk. Be responsible for HR legal matters, working closely with the People team and seeking outside counsel advice as/when it is necessary to do so. Own and nourish the relationship with law firms and outside contractors for work that touches legal projects or matters. Own legal governance, hygiene and diligence internally. As/when be responsible for legal aspects of fundraising or strategic financial activities e.g. build and maintain the data room and lead us through DD on a fundraise in the future. We’d love to hear from you if… You are a UK qualified (or equivalent) solicitor with at least 3-4 years’ PQE. You have gained at least some of your PQE experience in-house in a startup/scaleup environment, either through a secondment, previous role, or previous non-legal professional role. You have an entrepreneurial acumen with a solid grounding and interest in commercial matters. You know your way around an Enterprise SaaS contract negotiation. You have a good understanding of data privacy and infosec matters relevant to tech organisations. You enjoy people seeking out your input and guidance on legal matters You are happy handling the widest range of legal issues that come up in a start-up environment, even if outside your core areas of expertise. You are great with autonomy, but also know when team work matters. You are pragmatic by nature and thrive in an environment where change is constant and ambiguity is part of the process. You effortlessly manage high volumes, intricate details, and complex challenges, while maintaining a clear, simple approach in your work and communication. In-person and remote working balance … We have a small HQ in London (Holborn) and a small team of folks on the ground in our NYC office as well. Although our approach to hybrid working is flexible (we don’t mandate specific days in office), priority for this role will be given to candidates based in/near London and who are keen to spend a couple of days a week in a shared space partnering with the COO, sales team members, and the wider central operations team.
