Let us introduce the role
AWE is currently recruiting for a Senior Aerothermal Analysis Engineer to join and help shape the fast-growing Aerothermal Analysis team.
The team is a niche, high-performing, multi-disciplinary team of aerodynamic, thermal, and materials engineers that provide modelling and simulation expertise to AWE. The candidate will have a primary interest in high-speed aerodynamics and/or high-temperature materials.
The role will include:
* Contributing to the analysis of hypersonic re-entry vehicles for flight, aerodynamic, aerothermal, and material response performance using a suite of bespoke trajectory, CFD and thermal solvers; and working with the Team Leader to develop team and technical capability.
* Influencing and supporting test programmes and code development.
* Performing technical task management of junior engineers and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
* Applying engineering models, semi-empirical codes, and high-fidelity codes to solve complex coupled problems.
* Contributing to toolset validation and verification efforts.
* Leading academic collaborations to enhance experimental validation, new designs, and advanced numerical methods.
Ideally, the successful candidate will have the drive, technical aptitude, and personality to develop into a more senior position. There will be opportunity to work with peer organisations in the UK and internationally.
Who are we looking for?
We do need you to have the following:
* A good technical degree (Engineering/Physics).
* Extensive knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas:
o High speed (supersonic/hypersonic) aerodynamic analysis/CFD.
o Flight and/or re-entry dynamics.
o Experimental Aerodynamics.
o Toolset development and V&V.
o High-temperature material response.
* Ability to solve problems in making computational models and methods work.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to interact with staff at all levels and with other technical disciplines.
* Ability to produce and present clear and concise reports and presentations for customers, peers, programme management, and external meetings.
* An ability to work both individually and as a member of a team to tight deadlines.
* To be meticulous, methodical, and highly self-motivated.
Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we’d like you to have experience in some of the following:
* Experience of working on Linux (or Unix) and HPCs.
* Experience of coding/scripting (e.g. Fortran, Python, bash) would be beneficial.
* Membership of an engineering institution is preferable.
