The designation of Environmental Services Officer applies to a self-motivated member of the workforce. Their duties are to ensure that day-to-day handling and disposal of waste is in accordance with approved practices. The Environmental Services Officer will be employed to cover any post on any shift in the team. Collecting waste and or laundry from areas around the hospital and transport it to the Trust’s Waste Transfer Stations or waste storage points. They will join an integrated team responsible for all waste and laundry collection/storage and external litter collection together with any other environmental service as determined by the Environmental Services Manager.
All Environmental Services Officers in the Capital Planning and Estates
Management Department will form part of an integrated team whose role is to provide the best possible service to the Trust. Environmental Services Officers will have both group and individual responsibilities for defined aspects of the service but each will ensure their contribution is beneficial to other departments within the Trust, as well as the Capital Planning and Estates Management Department, so as to fulfil the Trust's overall objectives.
1. Collect all hospital waste and laundry in accordance with the schedules
set by the Environmental Services Manager.
2. Segregate, transport and process specific categories of waste as
dictated by the Trust’s “Policy for the Management of Waste”.
3. To operate the Trust’s electric vehicles, bulk waste compaction
machines and road sweeper.
4. To ensure that all aspects of the Waste Licence Conditions are
adhered to.
5. Place specific categories of waste in the appropriate skip for off site
disposal or recycling, as indicated by the Environmental Services
Manager.
6. Cleaning of bulk waste storage areas and waste containers as per
schedule determined by the Environmental Services Manager
7. Carry out external environmental duties, as per schedule including the
collection of litter, emptying of litter / smoking bins, removal of graffiti,
and washing down of external areas when required and podium roof
work i.e. litter removal.
8. Provide emergency cover for dealing with discarded needles, blood /
human spillages and disposal of animal carcasses in accordance with
Environmental Regulations.
9. Carry out inspections of all mobile equipment used.
10.Follow the incident reporting procedure in the event of accidents
occurring during environmental activities.
11.To carry out any other duties, appropriate to the role, as may be
delegated.
